Hi all, tought it might be time to start a picture ,discussion tread on the lowly Ross rifle as it is a truly Canadian rifle and part of our Historical past. There seems to be a tread for every rifle under the sun here on CGN but nothing much when it comes to the Ross rifle.
So lets see what you have ,anything goes from sporter to full military original. Here are a few of mine they have grown since then.

Top rifle 280 Ross
Middle Ross 303 R sporter
Bottom 1910 Ross sportered military rifle

Edited because Imgur is being a waffle about hotlinking.

May as well get this rolling :)

Looks like just an old ross eh?

Nope! US Issued!

This one isn't mine, but if anyone has one of those sight bases that bridge the receiver just above the bolt, I desperately need both the short and long versions!

H Wally, you are pretty decent at fab, no? Would you be interested in copying a base? I have one for an 05 action. You are welcome to borrow it to copy if you would like, but it's not for sale. I've been waiting for a 05-R with a good bore that's been hunted to put it on and continue hunting. I really prefer not only aperture sights but also the 05-R over the R-10, so it's a no brainer that I need to keep it. I may have a spare target sight to top a replica base with though that I would part with.

I'll join in the pictures this weekend sometime.

An option for installing an aperture sight on a 1905R...
I have one with a conventional Redfield aperture sight mounted. Someone made an adapter base, flat against the Ross receiver, filed to a radius for the Refield sight.
This is a composite rifle - someone skillfully filed a lengthwise groove in the receiver ring - so I swapped a Mk.II receiver which had been drilled and tapped previously for a bridge. The adapter mounting holes match the receiver holes.
I think most any typical receiver sight could be adapted this way, as long as the windage arm is long enough.
With my eyes, open sights on the barrel are a waste of time. A peep is usable, as long as the aperture is small. But I do prefer an optic.

1905Rs do have a bit of recoil. Trade off for being light and handy.

Really neat idea Tiriaq. You have my gears turning yet again. I may have to build something to suit again. H Wally, let's go to PM and see if the sight and base I have are what you are wanting.

Well, as a big fan of the Ross Rifle, let me get my three in here before the onslaught of people who have many beautiful examples, and Flying Pig throws in the pictures of the lovely ones he's (re)built. ;)

BTW...stay tuned with regards to this year's edition of the Ross Rifle/Vintage Rifle shoot. I'm hoping to be able to put the fourth annual event together soon. Lots of terrific Ross Rifles turn up for that event.

Mk II 5* - repatriated from the U.S. a few years ago, but not one of the rifles that were taken into U.S. service. Lots of strong regimental markings on the stock, which, based on the markings, was replaced early in its life, as the rifle went on in Canadian service with a few regiments after the stock replacement.

Mk III - with CEF and CMR markings

And baby brother: a Ross Cadet

very nice rifles and all in original condtion, all of mine are the sporter type.I have one that is getting close to being put back together and two beautiful actions that are waiting for stock sets as soon as Brandon aka(Flying pig) get them made.He is the only person that i know of that is making repro stock sets for the Ross right now

I can do some somewhat custom features with my reproduction stocks, I could inlet with the duplicator and do custom layout for the comb, grip, fore end and butt. But it will be hand carved (time consuming and expensive) and I cannot do synthetic stocks. I could likely do laminate though.

Just got a stock for my MkI , Brandon did a great job on it. The detail looks very accurate, including the hand guards which a are very fragile and are hand made. I would say he is quite commitment and loves his work, a good CGN.

Thanks a ton Dave. Can't wait to see it all together!

Here's my contribution to this thread for now. I rebarreled a 1905-R I have with a barrel from a MkII3* military rifle that had been bubba butchered badly. Added a receiver sight, should be a fine bush/beater rifle.

And some pics of my personal MkIII rifle I've restored over the last year wearing one of my repro stocks.

Mid band needs a bit more fitting on the MkIII and the 05 is pretty rough, but I like em.
