1905 Ross Mark II, originally a Military rifle, Dominion of Canada proof marks, looks like an aftermarket sporter stock but could be modified military stock, Lyman rear peep sight.

Post a good picture of the safety on the bolt, the right side of the forestock (any wood filler on it?), and the trigger/magazine area under the stock for a better identification.

I agree that it is a very nice sporter alteration of the Military stock. The commercial sporters has a serial number about 1/8 inch high, just forward of the front receiver ring on the left side of the barrel. Also, calibre was marked on top of the rear of the barrel, usually "303 Ross". The serial number was probably put on by the Gunsmith who sporterized the rifle.

First, the numbers on the bolt and barrel are inspectors acceptance stamps.
The metal came from (probably) a MKII 3* (guess) and the handle has been cut off the Harris lever (a favour to you as it is not needed and creates a weak spot in the stock where it has to be relived to accommodate).
The barrel is a standard military (pencil) barrel and not up to any accuracy, compared to a 2* Ross or any modern rifle.
Also, until you put a round through it you will not know what you have as the chambers of many were reamed out to accept poor quality ammunition. Compare a fire formed case to an unfired one and you will know.
The Lyman 50 rear sight was specifically designed by them for the factory sporter MKII Ross (and Mausers) and is most often seen on R and E 05s and the odd SDS. (google "Images of Lyman 50 Ross rifle sight") It has no relation to the BSA Martin or any of the other aftermarket sights fitted to military and civilian target rifles. The only commonality is that it is held on by four screws (of different spacing by the way).
The Lyman has unfortunately lost it's vertical adjustment knob (unobtainable) and has some strange screws holding it together so the mice have been at that too.
So, with apologies, what you have is a fun "flight of fancy", that may or may not shoot (TBA). So enjoy it for what it is, and, as with my wife of me, don't expect too much.
