Shot some 158gr 38 special out of the rossie 92 puma rifle.
I chrono'd some 158gr LRN super X, it was 1035fps.. advertised on box 755 (revolver maybe)
I zeroed about 50meters with a 2 moa Red dot Im testing out

I struggled at 100m on 8inch gong, suspected the drop was severe .
I will need a box to target as cannot tell in long grass where the bullets going .

Definatly not that keen to Hunt with it on Sambar deer... Would be ok at 75m with Fallow deer..

Will go get some 357 mag hunting rounds.

I use soft recoiling 38 out of my 357 levers when I'm introducing newbies to shooting. It's a good introduction to centrefire after they've tried out 22LR. I load 158gr lead SWC over some Titegroup to around 1050 fps out of a Marlin 1894. Seems like a similar load to what you've picked up.

I'm surprised how low recoil an medium boom it had!
That's a good move from the 22 up!

I'm yet to fire the 357 mag rounds, looks like 125gr Remington's?

Report back when do so

I threw your numbers into Strelok Pro. If you zero at 50 meters you will be 23 cm low at 100 meters.

I would suggest a different zero. Maximum Point Blank Range. For deer I use a very conservative 5 cm vital zone radius. If you zero at 15/75 meters you will be only 13 cm low at 100 meters.

With that setup even with hot 357 mag rounds deer in a petting zoo are too far unless you are ok with watching wounded deer run away. I’m well aware of the power of the 357 mag having shot the cartridge in different platforms over the decades. I’ve been a wheel-gunner since the late 1980’s and got into carbines not long after. Please don’t ever consider any 38 Spl useful for big game unless it’s for dispatching them from 10’ away with a brain shot.

Big game deserve a lot more respect and a humane kill in exchange for feeding you.

I know the op has been here longer than me but I always like to see the posts from the Australian members on this forum. It seems like they are in about the same situation politically and with current laws and availability. My brother moved to Australia about 5 years ago and although he was a gun owner here, pretty much gave up on shooting sports, says you have to be a rancher or something to get a licence down there, which I don’t believe is entirely the case

I have taken whitetail deer with 357 mag. I wouldn’t recommend it honestly. Slightly better than 223 but most other options are better. I would only use it in the future within 100m and with good 180 grain sp loads

Yrs ago I had a cow down, happened to have the 4 in model 19 with 38Sp target load, lead bullet, about 2 ft away, center of forehead,
the old girl blinked at me and it messed the white hair up, bullet bounched off, so one behind the ear, and that's all she wrote.
That is sure not a hunting round, unless it was small, I think a solid 22 RF would have done just as well.

Yeah, I don't think the 38 loads are an effective feeling round to shoot.
Not expecting a WHOLE lot more with 357 125/158 gr loads either..
"Extended Bow range" at best..
