I've got a Br#####h ranch hand that will only open a 1/2 inch and no more. Anybody got a good idea what to do? The safety and the hammer lock are both off.

Is the lever opening 1/2 an inch or is the bolt moving back half an inch?

If the bolt is not moving, have a look at the left side, there are 4 screws on there. Try loosening the uppermost screw (the medium one, near the top edge of the receiver) one turn and see if that does it. On mine that screw was too long from the factory and rubbed against the bolt, preventing it from moving. Filing the end of it a tiny amount allowed me to tighten it all the way without binding on the bolt.

If that doesn't do it, remove that screw. Underneath it is a pin that goes through the bolt and the lever, linking them. This pin could have backed out and could be blocking the bolt from going back. Put a small (preferably brass) punch in the screw hole and give it a tap or two to drive it back to its fully seated position, see if that works.

If this doesn't work and the bolt is still stuck, it's possible you have a stuck case. If you shot an overpressure hand load, this could have happened. As long as there isn't a live round in the chamber, You could put a long brass rod down the barrel and tap on the end of it as you try to open the lever.

Other than that, I'm not sure what else it could be. If I remember right disassembly requires the lever to be partially open, I'm not sure the rifle will come apart properly with the lever stuck.

I'm sure someone else will chime in with more ideas.

Well you can always drive out every pin and remove every screw and put all the parts in a bag, lose a couple and take it to a gunsmith and say your friend did it ... that's been done before...

Does yours have that stupid locking system?
I had mine partially lock under recoil. Left my key at home. I had to take the plug out of the mag tube to unload the rifle to get it home. One of these days I'm going to remove that locking system

Yes it does but I can fully #### the hammer so that's not the issue.

Before the lock up, did you disassemble the 92?

No but the previous owner may have.
The big screw next to the saddle ring was very loose, tightening it (2 full turns) did not help, and the screw felt very gritty going in.

I think I'd try disassembly next. You won't be able to drive the pin that links bolt and lever with the bolt as far forward as you say it is, but you should be able to remove the hammer and spring, the tang and most likely the locking lugs. Maybe what's binding the bolt will have enough room open the action.

I would but I just purchased it on here and it may be better to return it.

The screw that covers the lever take down pin...is in to far...back it a bit out..even if it loss...try it... Or the pin that goes though the bolt/ lever( the one under the screw...might be to far to the left...or right, uses a punch to center the pin, in the bolt...and that will cause it to no open all the way too. It's usually one or the other...
