Howdy,
I posted in the muzzleloader forum, however now that I think of it, this might be a better forum to post it in.

I was wondering if anyone has used the Rossi combo muzzleloaders (intergchangeable single-shot barrels: .50 muzzleloader, 12ga and .243 for example)? Impressions: Good or bad?

I'm kinda hoping to hit 3 birds with 1 stone here:
12ga: Always useful for grouse, rabbits and what not
.243: Great backup rifle for our camp while moose hunting and very low recoil for the wifey / son to hunt with and eventually learn with (my son's only 7 months old after all hehe)
Muzzleloader: On my father-in-law's land, we can hunt deer for only a weekend with a ML. Wouldn't want to spend a huge amount of money to buy one...Longest shot would be like 50, maybe 75 yards (father-in-law told me he can get within 10 ft of them usually).

Don't need to be able to hit a grapefruit at 100 yards with the ML / .243, but if the gun is capable of 3" groups at 100 yards, that would be plenty accurate for my needs.

Cheers,

Fish

I have a Rossi ML, but didn't get the extra rifle and SG barrels. I can shoot 1.5" groups at 100 yrds with it.

I like it, it has a shorter barrel and is easy to carry and points nicely.

Yup, I handled one (20ga / .50ML) at lunch time at a local shop and was very impressed. It was the wood stock version though, which in my opinion is a MUST. Not a big fan of the black synthetic stock.

Daveg, I've read reviews on other sites that the ramrod was very fragile. Did you have any problems with yours? Did you mount a scope on yours or you're using the glow sights?

Cheers,

I have a Rossi ( 3 in one )and NEF and both are amazing i love both of them but out of the 2 Id say the Rossi is my favorite it supper easy to change the barrels and nice to be able to just have to take the one gun( comes with a nice bag to pack all 3 barrels and stock )

I have READ a lot about them, and would really like a set for my kids to use. They were stocked by a few stores in the late 90s, but they seem to have disappeared a while back. I read they were about what you would expect of a budget firearm, and there have been complaints about accuracy in the .243. Once you get yourself taken care of, if you know where I can get one, shoot me a pm please.

Mine is wood and brushed nickel. A very pretty looking gun. Never had an issue with the ramrod - mine is collapsible.

I had a cheap scope mounted, but took it off this year as the mounts were the "see through" style and I found it was not a very good fit for me - I have to move my head to use the scope.

Unless I have time to buy and install new rings before the ML season, I will be hunting open sights with it this year. The sights are the glow kind.

Hi YKD,
Well like I said, a couple of inches groups (3-4) at 100 yards would still be usable for hunting purposes. In Quebec City, two local shops seem to stock them now: ProPac (418-780-8090) and Amants de la nature (418-845-4800).

I specifically went to les Amants yesterday and they had the wooden stock version and comfirmed they could order more. ProPac only had the black synthetic stocks, no ideas on orders.

I was asking myself the very same question...

i doubt that .243 would be a good idea for moose...

Does anyone knows a cheap .308 / 12ga over and under or with interchangeable barrel that would be cheap to acquire? It can be 30.06 / 12ga too.

I had one and got rid of it. I had the same idea as you.

Performance wise it was great but not exactly what I was looking for. I'll explain.

For deer, its a great combo. The short barrels were really nice to handle and the break action was great. I had scopes on both the ML and the .243 and it was nice not having to sight in each time. I did find the ramrod a little on the weak side but you get used to it.

I never used the shotgun.

I got rid of it because the accuracy from the .243 was not what I was hoping for. It was about 2.5 inches at the best with handloads. At times it was worse than that. I wanted to use it for gophers as well so this was not good enough for me.

If I was to use it just for deer, I would buy it again. If you get the choice, go for the wood stock and take a look at all of the ones they have in stock. Some are very nice.

JC you bum, go back to babysitting ;)

Do a search for the Rossi S12-308RBS or S12-306RBS (shotgun 12ga and rifle in 308 or 30-06: They have both). Interchangeable barrels only though and single-shot too.

Very interesting. Thanks for your post casterpollox.

I'll keep that in mind.
