I just obtained an older but nice looking Rossi .22 pump rifle. I couldnt get it to shoot at the range as it wouldnt pick up rounds when pumped. Checking it at home a strange thing happens, if I only put one round in in the tube it feeds it every time but two or more and no feed, anyone else had this happen? ideas how to fix? this is my first ever pump gun and I am hoping to get it to shoot reliably, should be fun.

Disassemble the rifle into its front and rear halves. Look at the cartridge lifter which brings the round up from the magazine. The cartridge rides inside the lifter. There should be a little pivoting part there - one round enters the lifter, and the part pivots, closing off the magazine and preventing another round from leaving the magazine tube. If this magazine cutoff is broken or missing, the rifle would feed if only one round is loaded, but not if there are more in the magazine. It would also jam, with the breech open. You did not mention if the rifle was jamming.

Thanks for the info, the piece seems to be in place in the lifter so I will try cleaning then try and check if it just worn out. It looks as if it has been lightly filed on the top for some reason but as I have only had it for four days I am not familiar with the origional shape, a check at the library in the exploded views book may help then if it is wrong then look for a replacement piece. It didnt seem to jam when pumping with multiple rounds but the lifter didnt rise as with a single round, is this a common problem?

Rossi Failure to feed

this can be a common problem with these, especially with a gun thats been slam fired a lot, which means holding the trigger back and working the pump rapidly, you can take the pin out which pivots the cutoff lever, the edge that the cartridge slides along to enter the cartridge lifter should be dead straight, if it has any curvature in its profile, it will require rebuilding or replacement, regards Bully.
