Rottweil Brenneke Classic 12/70 ……. 12G slug question

Has anyone used these before? Any data as to the slug composition and hardness compared to your regular "foster" slug available from Winchester and such.

I know the "Black Magic" slugs are harder…. just having trouble finding that offering anywhere….

Rio Royal Stars are VERY hard and carry the wad behind them. Have recovered some from shooting douglas fir rounds and they were barely deformed.

I did some penetration testing with a similar round (RWS Exact). Details and lots of photos on page 2 of this thread: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/735437-12-gauge-slug-design

Here you can see the recovered slugs side by side. From the left, 3 and 4 are the RWS, 5 is a federal 1 1/4 oz foster. The second foster slug completely disintegrated and I wasn't able to recover it.

The RWS is the most accurate slug I've used (in a smoothbore), likely due to the wad which remains attached and drag stabilizes the round. My $.02 is that the RWS slug's greater penetration, weight retention, and lower recoil (faster follow up shots) would be better suited to a tougher, dangerous target, despite the lower energy. The foster would be better for a soft target where fragmentation is less likely, and the rapid expansion becomes an advantage.

Hope that helps answer your question. If you do come across some Black Magic hook a brother up! :)

i can only report what i ve seen as a kid.

the 12 ga and brenneke was the most use combination in the old days for wild boar roe and red deers. i ve been always surprised what the wounds done on huge wild boar (the ones im talking were often over 100 kilos).

that s not for long distance shot and i prefer a rifle if you need to shoot at longer distance but at closer range no worries.

all the best and Merry Christmas to all.

I can add first hand that this same ammunition was so popular along coastal Alaskan towns, that most often, the ammunition shelves were completely sold out of this for the duration of the spring salmon run. Other calibres in high demand for wilderness protection along the salmon streams, 45-70 in 405 grain Corbon Penetrator & various premium brands of 44 magnum. And off course 338 Win Mag to a lesser degree, 41 & 357 mag, some 454 Casull too.
