round ball sporting rifles of the larger calibers

I am looking for a round ball gun, sporting design in a a caliber .54 or larger.... something easy to carry 28" ish barrel length? flint or cap with a butt plate that is not a crescent and has a quality lock.

any thoughts?

I think your choices in modern guns would be a .58 cal half stock or a 62 cal trade gun. Possibly a percussion fowler in 16 or 12 guage and not worry about the barrel length

Your looking for something like my 54 cal English sporting rifle.Marstar has a Gibbs African sporting rifle in 12bore ,it looks like my gun , it doesn’t t come with a ramrod but it has a rifled bore .It is based on their gibbs target rifle

I also use this one for deer hunting as well my Euroarms magnum Cape gun in 12ga these are great guns.One of these days I m going to put a set of express sights on it.

Check out Jim Chambers' English Sporting Rifle. The barrel is a bit longer, 31 inches, but it comes in .58. I bought the kit years ago, and still haven't got to it. Shame, Shame
Off the shelf gun - I love the Lyman Deerstalker, .54 Flint. This is a modern take on a flinter. Short barrel, no shiney bits.

The Renner balances nice and carries well.I ve shot it with 120grs of bp and felt recoil was minimal.The gun weighs 7lbs 8ozs

Check my website to see a 62 cal. English 1/2 stock. Excellent balance, shotgun butt to handle recoil. Don't ask how it shoots it's still hanging on the wall after a couple years waiting for sights. Thought you might appreciate it.

Well, certainly not traditional - maybe not to your bore size - but a "box of stuff" that I bought, delivered a 28 gauge small game slug kit from BPI - so about a .505" or so round lead ball, (I have not measured any) with a particular wad that goes into a 28 gauge shotgun shell - BPI book says 1,900 fps with Universal powder, Cheddite primers and hulls. I am waiting for the BPI "Slug Manual" for what it might have to say, but appears to be a roll crimp load with a heavier overshot wad. So, you fire it apparently from a 28 gauge shotgun. No clue yet what that does for accuracy - a round ball in a smooth bore - but apparently wars were won with such things - several hundred years ago...
