round nose

Why RN's? Just curious.

There can be several advantages to choosing a round nose bullet over a spitzer. The longer bearing surface of the round nose produces better accuracy from worn barrels. The round nose leaves a larger entrance wound than a spitzer, so if there is no exit wound, it leaves a better blood trail. A heavy round nose can have a BC equal to a light spitzer within caliber.

Like Boomer said. And... simple, effective, cheap. Very traditional (retro). Within "normal" range they may be even a better choice than pointed bullets. RN's appeal to me. But then I hunt big game with a .250 savage and 7x57, upland with a 16 ga, use a 2/34" 12 ga. for waterfowl and other obviously outdated and ineffective tools.

I have shot several deer in the last 3-4 years with a P14 303 British. My pet load for this job is a 180 grain Norma RNSP that I shoot at about 2450 fps. I have not taken any shots out further than 150 yards, but inside that, they are accurate and effective. Have not recovered one either, so cannot say what they look like after doing the "deed", but from looking at the exit holes, I have to say expansion is dependable and good, with exits being about Toonie size. No deer went more than 20 yards after the shot, all have been one shot kills. Regards, Eagleye.
