Howdy gang,

About to submit my application for my restricted PAL and just looking for an opinion on references. I was originally just planning on using my Dad and my bro, but then I started thinking (I know, I know - I should really stop doing that :p) Do they care who your refs are? I mean am I better off getting non-family to do it? Or does it really make no difference at all?

Also, since I'm asking questions: will my being recently separated (as in about three months ago) hurt my app? I've heard rumours that they can be pretty tough on separated/divorced people cuz of the domestic violence issues.

Thanks for the help!

Does it not say that you should use non-family members for your references on the app? I thought it did, so I just used my best friend and his wife. This made it easy for the CFSC as both people can be reached at the same phone number.

I don't have personal experience with the separation thing, but I've heard they will contact your ex to let them know you're a "gun nut wannabe". Hopefully that won't be a problem for you, but I honestly don't know. You can always call the CFC and discuss it with them... heaven knows they patiently answer all my dumb questions! LOL

I used my wife as a reference, no problem.

EDIT. OOPS! got my terms mixed up a bit.
For the FIRST application, a partner CANNOT be the one to sign off.
Fro a RENEWAL, a wife can sign.
In fact, the partner has to made aware of the application. If you do not get them to sign yourself, the CFO will contact them.

Sorry for the bogus info, it has been a long while since I did my FIRST app, and a little while since renewing it

Thanks for the quick response proonur. I just moved back here after 8 years away, so I'm kinda limited in my options for people who have known me more than three years. The info on the app is:

"A reference is anyone who has known you for at least three (3) years and is at least 18 years old. However, he or she CANNOT BE your current conjugal partner."

To me, that says family is okay. But that seems too easy *lol* I don't like it when government forms are too easy, it confuses me

As for the ex :)kickInTheNuts:), well he's wrestling crocs somewhere in the land down under, so the odds of the CFC contacting him are slim to none! I'm not too concerned about it really - nothing I can do about it, even if I was concerned. Que sera sera, right? I guess I'm more just curious what experiences people in similar situations have had with their apps.

they will almost for sure call your refrences, so keep that in mind :)

they'll ask questions like 'have you ever been afraid of anything ### has done?' lol, so make sure your ref likes you :)

I used my brother inlaw use me and my wife (his sis)

Thanks tootall. I'll give 'er a try as is. Worst they can say is "no" after all!

that can also take your money.

and you can use family I used my parents for both my PAL and RPAL (applied for both at the same time) and they want your ex's contact information (phone number and address) so they can contact them and see if they have any issues with you getting the gun license. Pretty much they want to make sure that you and your ex didn't part company screaming "I'M GONNA KILL YOU" and your not getting the license to fulfill the threat.

C.K

Do you have an old Doc and or Dentist that you use to go to? The form just has to say that they know you. Both of them will keep you records (they won't divulge any medical stuff), but they will have to say that they have known you as a patient since 19XX. Your doc will also disclose any info of mental instability (if there is any history). If there is none, I would consider it a professional opinion and hopefully make the process go a little faster.

Also, for your Ex. Make sure you write down his addy as "down under" (using his real addy down there). Heck, I would write it in bold. Not like you would be bringing a gun into Australia anytime soon.

Tootall.

Did you have your wife be your guaranteer? Not your reference as renewals do not require references.

Ok that's what it was: can't use your spouse as a reference. It's been a while since I filled one out, but I could remember there being a "CANNOT" in there somewhere.

Hopefully the CFC can manage dialing an international phone call to contact your ex and it will be smooth sailing. I'm sure they have the technology, but the motivation... we'll see, eh?

Thanks for all the info, gang! I actually took the easy route as far as the ex goes and just checked the little box that says I don't know his current address. I think I have his info buried in the bottom of a drawer somewhere, but I'm too lazy to dig it up :D I had to write out an explanation about the split anyway, so I just mentioned in there that he's on the other side of the planet - should be enough to satisfy them.
