Total noob here, early thirties & I might have shot a rifle 2/3 times in my life, 15+ years ago at that… All of a sudden I get an urge to buy a handgun. So I do some research, find out about the required courses & sign up & pay for the next crfsc which is in late May. After I realized I would need the cfsc as well, so I go to sign up but find out the next course is only offered in September. This is the first annoyance among many since I wanted to start my new hobby this summer.

Then I find more detailed information about the process of owning a restricted firearm. All I wanted was to basically do some target shooting, and since that’s one of the only two main reasons to own a restricted firearm, I thought it would be all fairly straightforward. Apparently not… The nearest approved range/club is 4+ hours away.

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but in order to purchase a restricted firearm, and only after I received my RPAL, I would then require an ATT, which I could only get if I were to become a member at an approved range/club.
So in my particular case, here’s what I’m up against:

-Complete crfsc end of May = $140
-Complete cfsc mid September = $140
-Apply for RPAL, wait min. 5 weeks
-Join closest range/club, in this case 1st time membership fee = $225
-“Several training sessions will be required over the course of several weeks to a month”, once deemed worthy club applies for ATT for you = ($130 gas + food + 9-10 hours/trip) x lets say 4 times
-ATT expires Jan.1, might as well wait ‘til 2012

So next year I get to buy that gun, and if I want to use it I have to travel the club, take a whole day to do so and spend ~$150 PLUS ammo.

It all just seems so ridiculous. Is there not an easier way to go about this?

You shouldn't NEED a gun range membership to get the ATT, that's just CFO policy that people have been contesting.

I've seen this place linked a couple times if you just need a quick membership to be able to transfer a restricted and get a STATT to get the handgun home: h ttp://www.silvercore.ca/

Someone said it works Canada wide. I haven't seen anyone say they were actually a member and it worked though. If you're looking to do target shooting, you will need to take the gun to an approved range for restricted firearms though. Can't shoot it anywhere else, at least to the best of my knowledge (I'm a noob too).

they don't care the name they just put it into the system...
i did two transfers from ontario today... they didn't ask much more than the name/purpose of use of restricted..

No, you are not wrong, that is the way it is in your neck of the woods. We have it a little easier here out West in that our clubs do not handle the ATT's, you buy a membership for a certified range and do the paper work yourself (which is very easy). Once you have eveything in order, it's quite easy purchasing and shooting a handgun .. unless the nearest range is 4+ hours away ...

Maybe start with non-restricted firerarms for now if the travel to an approved range is to much in time and $$. Or buy the handgun but don't shoot it very often ...

Your post should be incorporated into a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, because most people just don't understand the degree to which "gun control" has interfered with our freedoms, and you've summed it up very well.

Most people, even sitting M.P.'s, journalists, and other voting citizens, have no idea of what the current laws even are.

"Gun control" is not about crime control at all; it is all about the general disarmament of law-abiding civilians through ever-increasing levels of useless bureaucratic red tape.

Don't give up - that is exactly what they want. Fight your way through the tape.

The trip is worth it.
