I'm looking into getting an RPAL later this year and it seems like if I want to purchase any restricted guns I'll have to join a range. Unless I get 'collector' status, say goodbye to target practice, and let them come snoop around my house whenever they want to. What a great law.

Anyways, it's not as bad as it could be - I live only a few kilometers away from the Eastern Ontario Handgun Club. However the membership costs total $270 and I'd have to pay $200 every year to hold onto it. I find those to be insanely high albeit affordable costs. So my questions are:

1. Am I absolutely required to be a constantly active range member in order to buy restricted firearms?

2. Or could I get an RPAL and buy restricted firearms based solely on the fact that I live directly across from the Larose forest, which contains all sorts of dangerous animals?

That's the price you pay for the CFO requiring hundreds of additional truckloads of sand being added to berms in order to bring our horrible dangerous incident rate down from 0.0 to a barely acceptable 0.00.

You said $270 a year for membership and then $200 a year to hold it. I don't get that part. Why would it not just be straight $470 a year or is the $200 a one time initiation fee? Either way, divide it by 12 and what you pay for each month to go whenever they are open is reasonable.

Things to know
Annual membership renewal dues are $200.00 per year for a single membership, or a $210.00 for a family membership, Due no later then Nov. 30 of each year.

CSSA membership is mandatory this will cost $45.00 a year for a single membership, $80.00 for a family.
unless you are already a CSSA member
There is a $25.00 Course Fee that needs to be paid in cash at the training course.(covers the costs to run the course)

Depending on what time of year you join, the membership Dues will be prorated.
Reviewing A.C.T.S. & P.R.O.V.E. is a good idea.

Visit eohc.ca and rummage through.
Cheers and safe shooting.

Sounds reasonable to me. Good Value.

Sorry for the hijack but does anyone know if Silverdale in ontario prorates there range membership. Looking to have my license in hand in a few weeks.

It is a good value. I just wish I could get on a new member's course so I could join!

;)

Apply by email and let them know if you're available earlier if somebody cancels.

It is an absolute joy to shoot there. Quite often a shooter has a whole range to him/herself. And while not militarily regimented, neither is it a happy-go-lucky-anything-goes mentality; everyone acts with the utmost courtesy and sense of responsibility and safety.

And the moment you pass your safety course, you get the (figurative) keys to the club. (It's actually the code to a numerical padlock.)

Which reminds me: I forgot to log OUT, last time I was there.

BuSaPuNk yes Silverdale prorates their memberships. Meberships are paid for the year starting in January. So any month after that you can nock $20 off. ie from July-December would be $120.

It's a hell of a drive to Silverdale! Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome place, but living in Toronto the gas alone would make that one of your most expensive options. Have you considered closer locations?

I agree with your comment. Depending where you live you could get a membership from Silverdale, get your ATT's and then go to ,say Target Sports. Yes you would pay a daily usage fee there ($40.00?)but if you only go occasionally it may be better than burning all that gas back and forth to Silverdale. Of course you have to do all the math to figure out if it's worth it to you, depending on how much shooting you intend to do.

I understand both your points. The guys I usually shoot with are all Silverdale members. That's why I'm going to join Silverdale. We usually go in a group of 3-6 so we can all go together and car pool saves on gas.

I know how much of a ##### it was driving back and forth from downtown to there for my course. Went through a tank of gas in 2 days. Doesn't help i'm driving a truck though as well. Oh well. Thanks for your input guys! I might look at going to Target Sports when I just want to pop in and out for a quick shoot.

Thanks! Excellent made my life a little easier!

I know I can always call/email Target Sports/Grange but does anyone know if they pro-rate or if they base your annual on your signup date?
