Going for my courses Nov 30th, Dec 1st, 2nd and I was wondering what the rules are for the references. Would you be allowed to put your wife or any other close family as references? I don't want to have to get my friends to go through the interview over the phone that I hear can get tedious. Also, when the test is completed, are you informed if you passed or failed? Around what month could I expect my license to arrive in the mail if I am successful?

In case it's a factor, I am a Toronto resident and am taking my course/test there. I hear it's the last place you'd want to be if you're a gun nut :(

I just took mine last weekend they tell you your score at that time, it has then to be sent to the CFO for a "rubber stamp" so you don't get the "official" results for at least 7-10 days. As far as references go you wont be able to put your conjugal partner/wife. Anyone else that has known you for at least 2 years is fine. Waiting time is longest it can be anywhere from 28 days to......????? you are looking at prb at least march 2013 at this point :(

Don't wait to receive your paper results to send in your application.
Where it says results, just put in ,"Will send when I get them".
Send it registered mail to Miramichi.
Your official 28 days starts on the date they sign for it.
You'll probably receive your "results" before you receive the letter
from CFC saying that you're missing documentation (results).

Good Luck and welcome.

It should take no more than a few minutes. If I recall correctly, it was like maybe 15 questions and they are all along the lines of: is this guy safe, not a nutcase, not a criminal, not given to angry outbursts and he only wants to shoot for a) hunting and/or b) target shooting and definitely not to harm another human being even for self defence.

Yep. nothing tedious about it at all. Standard form questions that are easy to answer.

Oh boy that is quite the wait. At least the weather will begin to clear up around then.
The classes I signed up for are PAL & RPAL, so I am assuming I will get my PAL first. Do you think the PAL would still take me all the way to March to finally get my hands on?

I'm just really looking forward to doing some shooting with a gun of my own as soon as I can :)

It can take about a month to get your test back from the CFO once you pass.. then its a minimum 45 day wait for the most part to get your license. If you start now, end of February or early March is pretty realistic. The sort of crappy part about starting the process now is the christmas and new years holidays. The CFO offices will most likely be closed or running on a skeleton crew of staff. Pretty typical for a government agency around the holidays. This will definitely put a damper on things.

Review the thread about shortening PAL approval times. Following the steps outlined (and being polite and friendly with the CFC/CFO staff) will shorten things considerably.

(I'm thinking 45 days after passing your tests vs 75-90 days otherwise)

You apply for the Rpal, you wont get a seperate Pal as you are taking both course at same time. Now as for shooting/owing your own gun this could take a lot longer, if its a handgun/restricted you want to own. You'll need the Rpal to buy, then an LATT to transport to range and back, but to get an LATT i believe you will need a club membership and be active there for a few months before the range officers will sign off on your application. Good time to research and find out what you feel comfortable shooting at the range. Seems like a long process but well worth it.

I wrote mine down, it's from last year;

I did my phone interview today for RPAL. First question (after being told anything you say is entered as record) was 'why do you want restricted'. "Target shooting at the range, and if I'm any good at it, try some competitions." She seemed fine with that. Then there was a lot of single-line questions;
In the past 5 years;
-Ever charged, convicted or discharged of a drug offense
-Ever charged, convicted or discharged, of a firearms offense
-Ever been prohibited from owning a firearm
-Anyone in your family prohibited from owning a firearm
Stuff like that, then...
In the past 2 years;
-Diagnosed with depression
-Suffered a bankruptcy
-Divorced or breakdown of a significant relationship
-Suicidal thoughts
And a few others. Pretty standard stuff.

I snickered at a few of them, interviewer was nice about it.

The questions for my reference were basically all the same but reworded. Does he exhibit any violent tendencies? Does he like violent video games? Have you seen him threaten violence against anyone? Does he engage in or observe schoolyard violence? Were you pressured into signing for him? He of course answered No, but he wondered what would be the correct answer for someone who watched MMA or Boxing.

I used my ex-wfie and my mother. They as well as myself got asked pretty much the same questions. The conversation took maybe 10mins. When the RCMP lady asked me why I wanted my Restricted I told her although at this time I'm not interested in handguns that might change and the combo course offeres a discount so might as well get it. She chuckled and agreed that was smart and that was the end.

Does he like violent video games?

Man I can't believe they ask that.

One of my references is a good friend that I play Call of Duty with all the time. Am i gonna get screwed because of this? Should I be banned because I like Rambo, and Saving Private Ryan as well? Oh lord.
Man this is retarded.
