Rpal waiting period

Hi,

Waiting on rpal about 5 weeks in now, decided to call about status, I was told my app isn't even on system yet.

Because I've applied for restricted does that mean that both me and my references will have to be contacted for phone interviews?

When I receive my restricted licence I should be able to buy a handgun without gun club/range membership, is that correct? Of course ATT would be applicable to transport firearm.

Will be joining a range soon after purchase, or should I be joining now to allow for gun purchase?

I am curious what you get for responses as I am in the exact same boat (5 weeks).

It said on the application form that there is a minimum 45 day waiting period so I guess I was expecting around a two month wait.

I have been told by restricted gun owners I know that it is legal to own a restricted firearm and not be a member of a club but you need to be a member of a qualified gun club to actually purchase a restricted firearm. Which makes sense otherwise you would just be at home admiring your nice new shiny friend instead of giving him a workout at the range .

I makes good sense to join a club now just for the exposure to new firearms and the wealth of information you will get from other gun enthusiasts.

You need to join a club or range to buy restricted and apply for ATT. I waited 11weeks for my rpal so be patient. Once you know your app is in the system it helps if you have your references voluntarily call in for interview. Good luck.

My Rpal application took 5 weeks total, from being received in Miramichi to me holding the card in my hand, and about 1 hour later my M&P was home (I bought my range membership while at the gun shop). I would check this out, I followed it and got my application through pretty quick. The biggest thing is getting your references to call in after you've done your interview.

Edit: The waiting period is only 28 days from date of the application being received, regardless of whether it's in the system or not. The 45 days is a BS line they feed you so they don't have to staff the call center.

Check the status of your app on the website - if it's not showing on the website, it's guaranteed to not be on the system yet and they won't have any info for you.

As soon as the website changes to "completed initial processing", you can call in for your interview and get your references to call in as well.

Submitted mine back in mid-February, had my interviews first week of April, got my RPAL in the mail on 3rd week of April.

Are your saying I cannot purchase a restricted handgun without gun range membership? I thought once you have your rpal, you can purchase and transport the firearm to your home, with an att the gunshop would provide for you.

In Ontario you can. Not sure about other provinces.

Gun club membership would suffice. My club was 30 dollars

you can buy a gun, then you won't be able to take anywhere because you don't have an att. In order to issue an att, some provinces require a club membership. Some provinces do not.

I am in the greater Toronto area, after licence comes in going to make purchase. Thereafter will try to join islington gun club, if that proves difficult going to try aurora gun club. Anyone have any other recommendations for clubs in the hwy 7 / 27 area? Am willing to travel up to one hour(preferably less of course).

Yes you and your references will be called, sometimes they don't call for a PAL but always a Restricted PAL.

Whether or not you have to belong to a gun club depends on your province and the CFO there, here in BC you have to... but its not always a bad thing, with belonging to Silvercore my LATT allows me for 5 years to take my firearm to several gun ranges in the area as well as gunsmiths and to the border should if I was taking to the US (you need permission from the US of course).

You could join now but you might want to wait until you have your ATT or LATT that way your club membership won't won't expire before your ATT or LATT

oh BTW my RPAL took 100 days from the time I mailed it, that is for BC where the CFO is slow these days

Why would you even bother buying a gun that you can't use unless you are a collector. No point rushing the system to get a gun you can't use.

"...it is legal to own..." There's what the law says and CPFO policy. Ontario's won't approve a transfer unless you can prove you belong to a club. That's policy. However, most gun shops will sell you a handgun and hold it until you get your assorted permits sorted out. ATT's are sponsored by the club. There's nothing new about that either.

"...Some provinces do not..." It seems from postings here that all the Provinces are going that way. Despite there being no law that requires club membership.

You won't get your ATT in Alberta without showing proof of club/range membership, which means you can't complete the purchase. If you don't have membership at a range, what's the point or owning a handgun you can't shoot? And I've also heard for Alberta, and I believe they will do it - that when your range membership comes due they'll start knocking to see your renewal. If you can't provide one I bet they'd start causing problems for you - somehow.
