Buy TWO of them.... You knew I could not resist!

Yeah, I figured I got yer attention now. I've finally had time to print this RPR after my 18 days across the country having taught 4 CQB (2 days each) clinics and 8000 kms behind my back. Speaking of back, I'm a fanboy of Robaxacet... I'm in spasms for not rolling out my back and doing my daily yoga. Don't get old!

Okay, in this experiment; I recruited Buzzballer who lived nearby to shoot HIS handloads (Remmy 700 SPS Tac 20" , 155 gr Amax, 46.0 gr Varget) through my 2 .308 PR rigs. One of them is my sponsored AI Ax in .308... Shout out to Wolverine Supplies who asked me to put this rig through it's paces at my PR matches in Garrison Petawawa. The other is my newly purchased RPR in .308 and it's the enhanced version. The retail price was $1749.00 in that neighbourhood.

I deliberately choose to have Buzzballer use his handloads so that I can have an impartial bunch of handloads going through these rifles. No bias here with ammo selection. Also it's better to have him do the shooting since he loves the trigger time with each of the platforms....

The groups:

Have a look at the groups placed at the leg of each bipod/platform. The AI group had 13 shots through that ragged hole.

The RPR group has 5 shots through the ragged hole and Buzzballer confessed that he pulled them 2 shots as seen in the picture above and below.....

There, I think you can have a better look at the RPR group. 5 shots in and 2 shots pulled. Not bad for his handloads! :)

Here is the group for the AI Ax in .308 with Buzzballer's handloads:

And a closer look at the RPR .308 Enhanced (Gen 2??) group.... 5 shots in the hole and 2 shots pulled.....

Another picture of the 2 rifle platforms and their groups. I'll let you decide which platform can / will / should work for you and your : budget/ cool factor / competition/ game / ammo caliber / outfit color matching, etc, etc

Another picture of the AI Ax and it's S&B PM II with Spuhr mount and 34mm rings.... and the RPR with my Mark 4 6.5 x 20 x 50mm LR / T TMR reticle

A closer look at my AI Ax and it's proprietary brake..... Shoutout to Grumpy Wolverine who helped make this happen....

Left side view of both rifles .....

Left side view of the RPR Enhanced or Gen 2 in .308

So what's all this saying ??

The RPR can shoot really well when you have Buzzballer doing the shooting and not ME!

There is so much more potential in BOTH platforms (Wolverine Supplies sells both of them.... :) ) once we dial in the handloads to their barrel nodes!

For $1749 and taxes and shipping, you too, can have a great shooting rifle right outta the box. I better go and swab them bores soon!

There... should you buy one RPR ? Nope... go and buy TWO of them in various calibers. I just had to say that! I've been enjoying the RPR since driving across the country with it inside my Tacoma and now I can start playing with it's potential. :)

I'll bring both platforms up to my PR4 Match in Garrison Petawawa on 01-02 October 2016, next week. Bring along some .308 match ammo to put through both rigs!

Cheers......

I absolutely love mine in 6.5cm. This is at 300m and I can get many repeatable groups like this, had a group under 2" at 400m too

For that price, I would love one in 6.5 x 47 Lapua, I would buy one in 308 win if I don't happen to have a few good rifles in that caliber already.

Thanks for sharing, Barney.

They're great starter rifles, and nicely bridge the gap between a basic cheapy savage or Remington and a purpose built custom.
But I think I'd buy one really accurate rifle, rather than two identical, moderately accurate, rifles ! ( I know you were joking.)
What would be really attractive is if they offered them with no barrel from the factory, and you could choose your own higher quality offering.

Well, since I deliver many PR matches and clinics, Garrison Petawawa, currently; I'm in contact with many, many newbies to this discipline. Often many will start with a box stock Savage and / or Remmy SPS Tac or Varmint. Some want a DBM or detachable box magazine to play during say... Match 60 200m Rapid Follow Up. Many rookies find that purchasing a DBM kit of some sort and then having a gunsmith carry out the install on your stock quite prohibitive (time, cost, energy, effort , etc).

With that effort in mind, many rookies or newbies will pursue a chassis like : MDT LSS or Tac21 or Cadex or Archangel. Sometimes this route can be cost prohibitive or onerous or both.

So along comes the RPR with a 5R barrel, totally adjustable buttstock, 20 MOA Picatinny rail, handguard that takes all sorts of accessories, magazine system that is a game changer (uses M14 mags, PMags, AICS, AccurateMags, MDT mags, and others that slip my aging mind now), adjustable trigger weight, various sling mounting ability, tactical bolt handle, Modularity with AR style LEGO approach goodies.... what's not to like? Now I have another solution to suggest to my clients. I like having a correct answer or a series of them for my clients when they ask questions at my clinics.

At least I can look at folks in the eye, and respond, "Do you want the long answer or the short answer to your rifle upgrade concerns?"

I'm an insensitive jerk if or when I answer their upgrade question by pointing to my AI Ax in .308 and just say, "Solve all your concerns with buying an AI system, right off the bat..." My clients would think; for sure he's a douchebag.... I would agree with them.

At least with the RPR we have another approach to the situation many of us PR / PRS shooters have journeyed with. How and what approach to take to upgrade. At least we have choices and I'm grateful for that!!

Now regarding caliber question: .308 or 6.5mm.....

My answer is YES

I ordered a .260 McGowan Prefit barrel from Jerry at Mystic Precision. Time to let the researching process / journey begin!

You guys rock..... Thanks all !

Barney

PS:

I've just received a message from a CAF soldier in a hot and sandy place... he's coming back soon. His boss want a personal rig (they already have their work .338 rigs) to play with in .308. They were just asking me about the RPR and might go that way with THEIR personal rigs. Some of you who have taken my clinics know this soldier from dining with him at Danny's Steak House and also having him on our clinic ranges. I put together a Remmy 700 SPS Varmint/Police a couple of years ago and sent it out to Shilo, MB. Now he wants a DBM system, and I'm counselling him like I've done many times with some of you. All good fun!

Until you let your students try the AI AX, and ruin all other rifles for them. :-D

They're nice rifles as an overall package for sure, but they're not difficult to outshoot with a high quality custom build. I had an ai aw at one point.
Of course the ai would blow your hair back if all you had used to that point was a basic rifle or rpr.

I'm not sure its that cut and dry. I have shot a few customs and I don't see the difference really. I have shot many 5 shot groups in the .3's with my AI and the occasional unicorn in the .2's. 3/4" 10 shot groups are not a problem either.

The main appeal of the AI to me is the reliability. It feeds and goes bang evey time no matter what . If it falls off the table or takes a hard hit, my concern is the scope, never the rifle itself. If you miss, its because of you.

I don't miss anything but the double stack mags.
Accuracy was good on the ai aw, .4 on average, with the odd group in the .3's. And I will admit that I've had customs in the past that could not better that. But my last custom is warping my expectations. Chambered in 6xc:

7 rounds at 100:

300 yards

300 yard, first load test with .3 grain jumps per five round group. It doesn't even like this powder, lol.

And the builder is cranking them out with that level of accuracy consistently, so this one isn't a freak or anything. Cost is less than an ai, although one can't go wrong with the ai's excellent resale value.

Very nice shooting ntm. That 6XC sounds awesome.

I want to switch to either 6mm or 6.5mm next year in a Gradous (OTM) heavy palma barrel. I still have the stock med palma .308 on it now.

Hah, I want to switch to a medium Palma from the mtu I'm currently running. Makes me sweat, that mtu profile in a 26" does, lol.
Talk to the insite guys, they've got Mr. Gradous on speed dial. He's who set them up here, and taught them what they know.

Really enjoyed this thread - the precision is on my short list of what to get next - long range shooting just seems to resonate with me. My problem is procuring the funds to get into it. I ended up with many pistols and rifles that I am not shooting often, but simply don't want to let go of!

Waiting for my bonus next spring is just too long - the range is empty during the winter (except me, it seems, and good people who plow out the runs to the target posting stations) and I am losing all those months of practice and learning!

Maybe I should start a 'go fund me' page LOL :)

Shoot straight!

Glad you liked it. This forum has a wealth of information from lots of experienced people willing to share the knowledge and experience. I want to go to school on it all!

What's not to like? We just had a PR match up in Petawawa 01-02 Oct and I brought both platforms (RPR and AI Ax, both in .308) for the shooters to have fun at 600m and it sure was a great time!

Cheers! Adversity into Advantage!
