RPR in .223

I'm definitely interested in this. I wanted to try out the RPR but had no real justification because my TRG's shoot like a house on fire. I was contemplating building a tube gun in 223 but this would make for a fun practice rifle! I'm still hoping Ruger eventually expands their design into a long action as well, but maybe that's asking too much.

It says it takes AI style mags. Would be neat if it used AR mags but maybe that's difficult to do. The Mossberg MVP doesn't feed that well.

I think adding .223 to the RPR line-up is great and well timed too since I'm contemplating the purchase of my first .223 bolt action rifle (will be used for lots of target shooting at distances of 600+metres).

It's either the RPR (for more initial $ outlay) or buy a standard .223 like a Remington 700 SPS Tactical (16.5" or 20", 1/9 twist @ 6.5lbs.), Ruger American Ranch (16.12",1/8 twist @ 6.1Lbs.) or Tikka T3x Compact? (20", 1/8 twist @ 6.6lbs.) and add a MDT (probably ESS, not so much the LSS due to trigger location...) chassis or possibly the Magpul Hunter stock?

I do like the alignment of the RPR as the barrel and butt pad are in alignment along the recoil path, something it appears many aftermarket chassis' don't offer, that plus the no bedding blocks scenario are features I like.

However I'd like to try and keep the weight down because once optics/rings/magazine (even bi-pod/sling at times) are added the weight will be getting significant; the lighter the better for easy quick handling (another reason for wanting a shorter then 20" barrel).

I had read somewhere (w/o confirming it's authenticity) that the RPR is essentially a Ruger American underneath (minus a specialized barrel/chamber...) anyone know the truth to that?
If true, the Ruger American Ranch being 2/3rds. the weight and almost 1/3rd the price of the RPR is edging closer to my first choice as it would leave a lot of $ in reserve for customization (something I would prefer to do over just buying a completely built rifle).

Cheers D

Apologies to Scott_R if I strayed a little to far off topic.

Do any Canadian retailers have these yet? The more I think about the more I am really liking the idea of getting one. I would like a .223 backup/trainer/loaner/coyote rifle with a detachable magazine and the only other bolt action options out there with a chassis are pretty few and far between.

Oak Leaf Arms has some coming for $1749.99 +tx

would it be possible to convert a RPR gen 1 in 308 to the .223 version with a new bolt, barrel and mags? would love to have a .223 version but new bolt, barrel, and mag would be cheaper than a new rifle.

We just recently received ordering info and have placed our initial order. There is no definitive arrival date ...sometime in May. Phil.

oh wow.... I've been looking for a 223 bolt to convert my 308 RPR!!!!

Then I was about to pull the trigger on a Tikka and Cadex chassis

This is the easy button.

Waaay cool and actually has the 1:7... I'm sooo stoked right now.

AR15 mags would be convenient but the big problem is that you're restricted to an OAL of 2.260" for reloaded ammo. For long range precision heavy bullets, up to 90gr, you would be restricted to single loading. .223 AI mags allow 2.550" OAL loading which handles most if not all heavy bullets to seat into the lands.

oh well cool your jets boys

I'm told they are 6 months delivery.

To Canada at least.

I ordered one today, now I wait.

Interesting. I don't reload .223 right now and I did not know that. Might have to start if I get one of these.
