Hey guys,

Thinking of making a "super compact" ar15. Just wondering if this is A) Legal and B) Will it work? I've attempted to contact RRA, however attaching a stock to a pistol is against the law down there, so they will not discuss it with me.

Originally I was looking at purchasing a RRA 7" LAR15 Pistol, and attaching a stock to that. However, they told me to remove the buffer spring to attach a stock (Illegal on pistols in the US) would require smithing and would not go into detail.

However, I noticed on their website they carry the 7" Upper Receiver by itself. Would it be possible to just simply mount that on a lower, with buffer spring, etc and be "good to go". Is this legal for me to do? Is putting a 7" barrel on a restricted rifle ok? From what I can see, it seems to be ok,

According to the Criminal Code, a prohibited firearm is:

a handgun that
has a barrel equal to or less than 105 mm in length, or
is designed or adapted to discharge a 25 or 32 calibre cartridge, but does not include any such handgun that is prescribed, where the handgun is for use in international sporting competitions governed by the rules of the International Shooting Union,
a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,
is less than 660 mm in length, or
is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,

The plan is to then attach a NEA Compact Carbine Stock

And then (hopfully) a set of MP7A1 sights OR HK416 Rear Sight and Front Flip Up Sight or if budget issues, Troy Micro Sights

Love or hate the idea - Will this work? Also, legal?

Thanks!

It will work (just the upper) but I'd question how well the gas system would work on such a short barrel.. Also it will be really really short. Likely tough to shoot and shoulder... Also you will make no friends on the range ... But you will look like a badass ... Also you need a huge 4 port break on it ...

If I could make a suggestion. NEA makes a complete rifle in the configuration you are looking for. Why not just buy the entire thing from them.

The RRA shorty hand guard will be VERY short. Notice how the NEA hand guard covers the gas block and part of the muzzle break? Thats because the thing is so short.

FWIW SBR rules are a US thing and have no status in Canada. By "gunsmithing" they mean remove some parts. The NEA CCS stock uses its own bolt carrier and does not have a buffer so it would be pointless buying a RRA pistol and converting it. Just buy the NEA. Did I mention that before?

Truth be told im looking at the RRA pistol mostly for the forend. I know NEA makes a small ar, however the quad rail look isnt quite my cup of tea. Unless i can find a hand guard i like in that size, thats the route i want to go.

If anyone knows where you can buy different style (ie not quad rail) hand guard, im all ears.

Edit: scratch that post. After further looking it looks like RRA sells the pistol hand guard.

What you are gonna discover is that the RRA hand guard is too small. Your fingers will naturally extend over the end and touch the gas block which will get quite hot after a few mags. This is one reason why all the other short barrelled PDW's have a hand guard that extends almost to the muzzle.

The best PDW fore ends I have used are the JP Ent and Midwest Industries 7" rails.

I am in NO way a expert on AR's but I currently own the NEA 7.5" with the CCS stock. This is a great FUN rifle ( hand gun ;) ) The CCS stock uses a proprietary BCG/Buffer all in one and makes this incredible short . In the untouched configuration you get a lifetime warranty - basically peace of mind .
OP it's worth considering the stock set-up from NEA and changing the cosmetic fore guard and parts and wanted. I'm toying with the idea of cerakoteing the finished product in a burnt bronze or something for the ultimate personal custom touch.

Likely be a few $$ cheaper than going with the RRA piece meal and having a typical black AR

BUT OP either is terrific - after all it's a AR and a new gun - and its a super ###y 7" hotrod

Gents

I have to admit, for the longest time the purpose and practicality of the Micro barrelled or 7.5" AR eluded me.

Then I built one for a friend, thoroughly tested it, and now I get it!!

As was stated earlier, 7.5" carbine are very cool!!!

Buy the complete RRA pistol and swap out the factory "pistol only" receiver extension for a standard AR receiver extension and drop a stock on it. I had one for a number of years that I did just that to, and it worked great. I did swap out the factory short hand guard for a longer Troy TRX as the factory one is pretty short.

Oh, and short AR's are awesome!!
