Anyone been out this year and actually seen or heard any Ruffies ?

Looking to go tomorow and a hint on where to go would be great as the last two seasons I haven't had much luck in locating any. Places I used to hunt years ago seem to be barren. The wet year we have had is not a good omen either.

Let me know if you have stumbled upon any populations.

Ive been out several times, Ive been all over woodridge, badger all the way out to vassar... the population is at an all time low this year...in previous years id park the truck, walk up the power line off firegaurd 13 and take my limit in about 30 minutes... have a cook out, eat 2 and go shoot 2 more before heading home... now its just a nice quiet walk in the bush...

oddly enough tho, we have sharp tail out on our fields (south of st malo) in pretty large numbers... buggers are easily spooked tho so ive taken to use the .17 HMR from 50 yards away as Im not able to get in close enough with the 20g before they spook...

Well I made it out to the Sandilands on Sunday, near but not at a place I used to hunt with lots of success.

Arrived a tad later than I wanted to but parked at the head of a trail I decided to walk. While getting my chit together, I heard a shot not too far distant so I figured somebody has at least seen one. Before I set loose the hound and get moving down the trail another shot rang out nearby and looking back there was a car and a truck on the road at the same spot fifty yards or so away but facing different directions.

Figgered I better get a move on before they shot the only other bird out here !
So I turn around and take a few steps downtrail and is that a grouse I see under the pine just ahead? Sporting or not, I haven't had a ruff to eat for a couple years, I ground sluiced him with the Browning.

Of course knowing that where there is one there is often another, I forget this and the other hits the afterburners into cover before I get over first bird fever. Voodoo, my Brittany whom woefully I have not trained on birds does not want to pick it up after a mouth full of feathers but had no qualms about rolling in the guts after I later cleaned them.

Yup, "them" as in another. About 40 yard walk down the trail (it ran parallel to the road only about 25 yards in ) I hear the car on the road slowly creeping by and I'm thinking....Surely the fellow knows I an in the immediate area as I have just fired a few minutes ago and my truck is highly visible, if he were to see one would he fire in my direction ?

Answer, YES, TWICE

Thankfully no pellets made it to me or Voo, but I thought hmmm. if he missed there may be a ruffie on it's way to me. Sure enough, it presents a nice level crossing shot and the other fellows missed bird was now my bird in the hand.

From my first shot to the second bird was no more than about 15 minutes. Never saw another bird until I had packed it in after more than a few miles of walking trails and busting brush when one crossed the road in from of me while heading for home.

Like usual, I carried a camera with me but forgot to take a damn picture of my hard gotten game and was too slow to get a good one of the black bear either when I was in the truck headed for other trails.

Mighty slim pickins this fall. Was out last week and walked for half the day. Put five up total and never got a shot off. Underbrush was still too thick. Saw plenty of deer though.

Ya same in my area...nothing much at all. I wonder if the very wet spring has anything to do with it? Actually just got back from a 2.5 hr walk and heard one fly deeper into the bush...thats it.

Spent 1/2 a day hunting East Braintree and Whitemouth Lake roads on Saturday and saw a total of 5 Ruffies and 1 Spruce Grouse. This morning I hit the trail into our cabin in the Whiteshell and saw 2 Ruffies and a couple of Sprucies. Lots of birds up in the Manigotogan and Bisset areas. A few groups of hunters I talked to this past weekend reported seeing and shooting lots of birds.

I've been all through Aggasiz Forest and I've seen 5 ..didn't shoot any and don't intend to because the populations are way down...leaving some seed this year. This is over 7 weeks of bear baiting ...............going up to Manigotagan this weekend ,see what's up there. Shooting BP anyway...maybe I'll get my deer???!!!!

I have been having opposite luck this year I go looking for other game and keep bumping into ruffies.

I went out with my muzzleloader on the weekend and came across around 10 of them. By the end of my hunt I told myself the next one that ran across my feet I would either golf it's head with the butt of my gun or blow its head off and have to reload. None were seen after that.

Before that I saw only a couple while hunting specifically for them. And that includes about 20km of walking.

Talked with several other hunters that went to Manigotogan/Bisset areas this past weekend and they all reported that they got their birds. Lots of Sprucies around as well, but the birds are getting skittish from the traffic I guess.

Was out yesterday afternoon for a walk with my youngest. Bumped into three ruffies wihin the hour and nailed two. Foliage is finally starting to get light and was able to spot them. Found a doe someone had shot a wlile ago and just cut off the the hinds.

Thats sad and lazy, around my parts the american hunters like to cross the border and do the same. Oh, well it's food for the coyotes i guess.

Ravens were having field day. Deer was likely shot ilegally as it was in a bad state of decay. Muzzel loader has only been open for 10 days.
