What kind of group could one expect from these rifles? For arguments sake,we are shooting quality factory ammo.I have an interest in this rifle/caliber but have had no experience with either.

I have never fired factory out of mine, but with handloaded hornady 350 grain bullets it shoots cloverleaf groups. I also have a #1 international 30-06 that consistantly shoots 1.5" at 200 meters. My 458 tropical is also super accurate scoped, but now use it only with open sites. Ruger #1 are great rifles don't hesitate to buy one. I have also loaded maximum loads with the 500 grain Hornady with great results.

I used a #1 Ruger for deer hunting on the prairies fro a few years. In order to be successful it took a bot of stalking and real hunting in coulees and creek beds.
The reloads I used were 300 Gr hollow Point Hornady bullets with IMR 4198.
The load was a fantastic shooter, averaging 1 1/2" for 5 shots...plus the load was easy on the shoulder in comparison to the heavier bullets. Whatever it hit it put down...not one deer moved after getting hit by this mini sledgehammer.
Cheers

AWESOME rifle. One of my favourite calibers and one of my favourite rifles. I have never owned the combination; but, you're a lucky shooter if you do.

I wouldn't shoot factory ammo out of a Ruger #1 in 45-70. The reason breing that factory 45-70 ammo is anaemic and the Ruger has the strongest 45-70 action going. It's a rifle that begs to be used to it's potential which is not 350 gr JHPs at 1700 FPS.

45-70

Very good information above including Alonso's deer bullet recipe. My Ruger no 1 shoots only reloads for all the reasons well said above but you CAN find some fairly decent factory loads like Hornady Leverevolutions and similar premium rounds. Besides, you need some brass to get your reloading started.

The 45-70 is an excellent penetrater. A 350 gr hornady FP loaded to 2000 Fps will out penetrate a .338 at 100 yds. Tried this on a chunk of power pole . The 45-70 went 14.5" the .338 9" and i am sure had the pole been anchored the 45-70 would have went completly through but it blew it 5' over the back stop.

"Sounds like it will easily outshoot my abilities."

No such thing. If you shoot 3 inch groups and your rifle shoots 3 inch groups you get 6 inch groups. It is always the combo. I don't know why the mags always seem to say this (allows them to cover for a bad test rifle). If that weren't the case we wouldn't need target rifles.

The numbers quoted here, sound reasonable, but don't really outperform claims and press for the Marlin guide gun. The two advantages I see to the N1, other than good looks, are that it allows/requires reloading to a longer OAL, which means a lot more potential power, but if you get loads designed around the shorter lever actions, as most are, you get a jump to the rifling and less accuracy, so I would consider it a hand loaders gun. And it is lighter, more compact, so for a guide gun ap, it is handier, but a lot less firepower. to the extent that maters in your app.

I asked about accuracy in regards to factory ammo because I felt that would reflect the natural accuracy of the gun.I realize most .45/70 people shoot handloads.....but that is a different story. Thanks all who offered experience.

45-70 is as 45-70 does

Agreed. Handloads perform so much better for reasons well explained above that factory loads might as well be understood to be a different caliber altogether.

Can you tell me if it takes black powder? Black powder shooting with a sharps is a blast. I am wondering if its the same with another make.
