Ruger #1 in Grizz country? (Not a defence thread!)

I have a hunting partner that takes some abuse for shooting a #1, simply because it is a single shot. He holds extra shells between his left hand fingers (shoots left) and can reload as fast as most shooters using a bolt. I always liked his gun, shot it last season, was a little punchy but very accurate and balanced.

And hey, I only said I was thinking about a #1! I'm also thinking about a CZ, or an M1, or a Tikka, etc etc.... I haven't decided to buy anything yet. But if I was a big shot in Scotland like you and had your money, I would just buy them all and get it over with. :p

A friend up here collects SS/laminated Ruger #1's in various chamberings. His choice for last fall's horseback moose/grizzly hunt was his #1 in .375 H&H Mag. They never did catch up to the big grizzly they were following, but he did bag a 63" moose on that trip :D I find them a bit heavy for a single shot but if you want one, go for it.
 
ok, i am not the greatest hunter nor am i the most informed on the latest firearms info, i think the question was regarding useing a #1 in grizz area. i would love to use a #1 but would GUARANTEE a 12 guage in progressive loads is far more affective in stopping a big bear than a single projectile as back up. lets try ... at a distanse say a slug, slug, then a few rounds of 00 buck shot ..then close in ..say 15 feet # 7's. that ...if properly placed should finnish any bear. if at the begging of this the # 1 failed, would you really choose a single round?

Yes, but the questions is not
"is a single shot rifle adequate for Grizzly bears?", but
Would you tsake a single shot rifle on a hunting trip to Grizzly country?"

To answer the first question, sure take it , whatever.
A person's cool head and thinking is the most important tool when in a dangerous situation, not the amount of firepower.

To answer the second question that seems to creep into every thread on bear defense, anything can happen, but I want the FIRST shot to go where it is intended!

As usual, Mr Cat, a very good response. Too many rely on equipment to do the job, when in fact it is our ability to apply the equipment that gets the job done.

i agree it is not up to the equipment to do the job...rather the operator. having said that, most would not have the calm peace of mind to deal with a chargin grizz with a single shop in my opinion. i could shoot deer with a 22, does that mean it is the right choice?
 
"Calm peace of mind in Grizzly country" is not the same as hunting deer with a .22.
Take what makes you feel comfortable.
I have lived in black bear and wolf country all my life and often go into the bush with no rifle or shotgun.
I know people who wouldn't step foot outside the city without something to protect themselves "just in case".

Just an observation....
