Hello, My brother has a Ruger #1 in 25/06 that he would like to rebarrel to 9.3x62. Can any one recommend a gunsmith to do it?

Would it be possible/feasable to rechamber and rebore the existing barrel?

Rechamber? Easy. Reboring? Once frequently done, now pretty hard to find and expensive. For the machine time, much more feasible to rebarrel and cut a new chamber. It was a much more feasible option in days gone by when labour was the cheaper part of the equation.

I will disagree with oneadam. The price of rebarreling a #1 is higher than most because of the extractor cut, refitting the rib (and sights if it has them), bluing etc all on top of the price of a fresh tube.

Ron Smith will rebore the barrel for less than the cost of a fresh blank, and no other work needs to be done. I would also contact JC, and Bob jury and see if they are reboring - as I know Ron smith can get busy and may not be taking on new work. I would call and talk to him.

Reboring is actually much less expensive than rebarrelling, especially in a Number 1 rifle.

As well, when done there is also no inletting to be changed, no bluing to be done, just put the barrelled action back in the stock, and head to the range.

I have had several rifles rebored, and every one shot as well or better than the original bore.

Thanks, I will google the names. Do you have any contact info for them. You cam PM me if you don't want to post it.(double gun)

Is he sure he would like to do that to his 25-06 No.1? Might consider leaving it as is and buy a 9.3x62 No.1 instead. I would be hesitant to alter (adulterate?) any No.1 rifle.

I think the rifle has been messed with already/ price is right for a project.

Might consider the 9.3x74R instead. Flanged cartridges are nice in a No.1 rifle. A much cooler 9.3. :p

I have a 9.3x74R No.1-S -

Ron Smith is who I would send it to, as well. He is busy, and takes a while, but has done very fine on every rebore job.

The last one was a 7mm Rem Mag rebored with a 1:30-14 gain twist and rechambered to 358 Norma.

I did talk with Bob Jury about a year ago, and he said he would rebore a barrel for me. Since then I have 'heard' that he is no longer doing rebores.
