A number of years ago I had a chance to buy a new Ruger #1 Varmint in 280 Remington.
IIRC it had a 26" barrel. And the price was only $400 and when I couldn't convince my brother it was a good deal I should have bought it for myself.
Does anyone have one and did I miss big time by not putting it into my vault?
Years later I bought a 280 Remington in a Remington 700 DBL SS made in 1994 and it is my go to rifle.

If you are seriously wanting a 1v in 280 and have money to burn look up classic sporting arms on Facebook. For some reason his website is down at the moment but if you contact el numero uno he likely will find you one. He is in Texas. I have bought and imported a few hard to find rugers from the man. 1st class all the way. I seriously doubt there's a more knowledgeable man alive when it comes to the no1.

Look at the bright side; heavy barrel varmint rifles that are chambered for big game cartridges, are a drag to pack around in typical big game hunting circumstances. A sporter weight rifle, in the better examples, is equally accurate, is easier exploit your marksmanship prowess with, from field shooting positions, and since one does not typically fire strings of 10 or 20 rounds in the course of a big game hunt, the heavy barrel has only disadvantages. If you're interested in extreme long range shooting, a #1 lacks the camming action of a bolt action, so the loading techniques often used to maximize accuracy like neck sizing only, and seating the bullets to jam length, results in slow and tedious loading and you struggle to close the action. Now think about the attributes of your "go to rifle" and you'll see that you've chosen well.

I know there was a varmint-weight .280 on the EE in the last several months but I don't recall what rifle. Sako rings a bell. Or Ruger 77, but I don't believe it was a Number One.

We all make mistakes. I traded off a #1 AB Ruger with a 3 digit serial number chambered in 222 Remington.
I Should be slapped for that one.
I actually handled a #1V in 280, but I believe the barrel was 24", not 26".

Don't dwell on it. It's like realizing on Sunday morning that the girl at the bar was actually into you. You can't go back.

Okay dude, you are going to have to chip in on the computer repair bill after I spit coffee all over the keyboard and monitor! Thats some funny $h1t right there! Thanks for the early morning chuckle!

The No1 HB in 300Win Mag that I had came with target blocks. I mounted a Unertl two-inch 20X on it, and had a ball for a while.

Unfortunately, it was extremely accurate, and became one of the most boring rifles I ever owned. I never regretted selling it.

Exactly.... and remember, someone, somewhere is already tired of putting up with all her crap anyway.

Way too many shoulda, woulda, coulda's in our life to regret a missed opportunity here & there.
