Just curious as to how much is actually lost in overal accuracy when installing a shorter 12.5" barrel?

I recently purchased a ruger 10/22 VLEH or target tactical(hate that word tactical) and it is hands down the nicest .22 ive ever owned. Houge stock, .920 heavy bull barrel with target crown, nicer trigger assembly and ive found it be quite the accurate little plinker.

I just purchased a ruger sr22 for the woman to replace her mossberg tactical .22 and who am i kidding for myself as well. This rifle willl be for short range plinking with a red dot and magpul mbuis. I just ordered the dlask .920 12.5" bull barrel for it as i love the looks. Is there going to be a drastic difference with the shorter barrel? thanks.

lost? Your usually going to gain accuracy with a 12.5" in a .22. One member found MV to be more consistent out of his 12.5" Dlask than a longer bbl, the short heavy bbl is much stiffer as well. You wont be losing much velocity with most ammo and may pick up a little with some types. Its a great bbl length for .22lr

The quality of your barrel determines accuracy, not necessarily the length. I don't know about MV though (which could determine consistency for longer shots but probably also depends on your ammo).

I've read that .22's burn all their powder in 16" of the barrel.

Do 12.5" cycle as well as a 18"?
I have a 12.5" and it seems to not cycle as well as my 18" barrel. Maybe its just time for another cleaning :( or these darn marauder mags

does it cycle slower than the 18"? with the shorter bbl the bullet leaves the barrel sooner cutting the pressure curve short. What type of ammo are you using? Have you tried higher velocity ammo?

Here is a test that I did on last winters build

As far as I am concerned, when it comes to the .22LR round shorter is better (with in reason of course). Unless you are running open sights, then sight radius has a valid effect on short barrel accuracy.

Also check out the tests done by the fellas at Ballistics By The Inch...

My current 10/22 project has a 9" barrel ready to be installed. With the cheap/bulk ammo I typically use; going from an 18" barrel to a 9" barrel looks like I will loose 50 fps, a small price to pay for the handiness of a true carbine length gopher gun.
