Hello,

I am about to buy my first gun and I was looking at a Ruger 10/22. I want to change over to a heavy barrel, but I'm having a hell of a time locating a canadian dealer. I do, however, live about 40 minutes away from the US border. Would I be able to buy one and bring it back across?

I read through the laws on the RCMP website and I couldn't determine whether I could or couldn't. Can someone confirm the correct answer?

Thanks in advance,
N.

Thank you for your quick reply. I see that the 3 options there are 12.5" or 16.5". Do you know of anywhere else I could look that has 18" or even 20" barrels? Thanks again.

Bits of Pieces sells Green Mountain as well, great barrels

and Wanstalls is bringing in Volquartsen stuff. As well, Mystic Prescision has at least 3 different ones too.

also, look for a takeoff from a Ruger Target rifle, they are pretty damn nice too.

Depends on if you want a heavy gun or light gun.
There are two types of bull barrels. Steel and aluminum with steel sleeve.
Both are great upgrades.
Dlask,
Wanstalls,
Mystic and
Milarms have aftermarket barrels.
Steel barrels can be more than twice the weight of a stock barrel, were as a magnum research or tactical solutions barrel are 13 and 15oz.
So less than a pound! Great for offhand shooting.
IMO a steel bull barrel isnt for offhand shooting only benchrest shooting. So if your going out shooting gophers with a steel bull barrel. You might want a tripod too.
Again both are great upgrades though, just think about what youll be using your gun for.

Why do you want such a long barrel? 18"-20" Steel bull barrels are very heavy and do nothing ballistically for a .22. Maximum velocity is usually reached at 14"-16" and after that the bullet actually starts to slow down. 22's used to have long barrels so they had a longer sight plane for iron sights but as very few aftermarket bull barrels have iron sights anything over 16" is a bit of a waste and can make your gun very muzzle heavy unless you go with a sleeved one.

Yeah or you know a longer heavier bull barrel might make a more stable shooting platform off the bench adding accuracy. He did not say he was going to be carrying it around much so we can't determine if he plans on using this for any off hand shooting. There a reason many target .22lr rifles have 20 inch and longer barrels.

Across the border is not a legal option. While there is no Canadian law against it, there are plenty of US laws against you exporting firearm parts. If the US border guys do an outbound check and nab you, you're going to be in for a world of hurt.

I got tired of the lack of stock on 10/22 barrels, so I went with a whistle pig from the US.

I went with a threaded flat black 16". It's an awesome barrel and exactly what I was looking for. Plus it was 40% cheaper than the other options.

Thank you all. I really appreciate the feedback and suggestions. I'm sure I'll have more questions as the weeks pass. First things first, however, I need to acquire a gun.

Regards,
N.
