How difficult is it to buy and install an aftermarket part which will cause the bolt to hold open after the last shot in the magazine, and why was such a device not installed in the first place, in terms of function?

I love my blued target rifle except for this point.

The sticky for 10/22's has info on this. I used a small file and did it in about 5 minutes. It took a bit to get it all together again but it was my first time. While I was at it I polished up all the other parts too.

your refering to the auto bolt release. it can be done in about 10 mins with a file.the op is asking about bolt hold open after the last round is fired.it requires adding parts and haveing the mags modified.check out you tube some where on there is a clip about this.

Brownells sells a a kit thats holds the bolt open after the last shot, but requires the magazine that comes with the kit in order to operate. I believe you can also buy the parts to convert your old mags to work with the kit. The auto bolt is a must buy part for $10. Rimfire Sport and Custom sells the best and least expensive 10/22 add ons.
