Ruger 10/22 field stripping issue. receiver/bolt stop pins

Like the thread title says... I just bought my first Ruger 10/22 brand new and already fired a hundred down range in the bad boy. I read the manual and tried to field strip it/clean it. I took it out of the stock with no problems.

To take out the trigger guard, I know i had to drift out the two receiver pins... one came out easily but the other one was really hard to take out. I couldn't even take it out with a pen... so I took out a small peg, and hammer slowly and gently tapped it out. I know this isn't the smartest thing but I was tired and I wanted to clean it. Out came the trigger guard.

I wanted to take out the bolt so I needed to drift out the bolt stop pin. It wouldn't come out. I tried tapping it out again gently but it won't come out at all! Add a little but of more force and it still won't come out. Now this is my first Ruger 10/22 and first 22 rifle. I'm sure what I did was wrong to drift out the receiver pins out but is there a better way to take this bolt stop pin out? Short of me doing what I did and using full force... I can't take it out. Should I call up Ruger? Or try to go back where I got it and get them to take it out for me? I made some scuff marks when trying to take that bolt stop pin and I was unsuccessful. It shouldn't be that hard to field strip this.. I only think of calling up Ruger because they might give me a new receiver or something since I scuffed it up. I don't know though. I don't think I should need to use a hammer or anything to drift out pins.

Punch them out towards the right of the rifle. Do not fuuck with the safety cause there is a spring under it that does 2000fps off to never never land (if your not careful).
And yes they all have paint peeling off inside the receiver.
Check on You tube, allot of tear downs taped.

look on youtube there are many videos on taking apart a ruger. there is one on taking apart the trigger group which i found really helpfully.

Try going the other way when you tap it. Some of mine go easy one way but hard the other I don't know if it is the holes in the receiver or the pins but some drift only one way.

I have had a total of 4 10/22's (currently 2).... 3 of them I got new. All of the new ones were tight getting the pins in and out for the first 20 or so take downs..... The "used/old" one I have I got form my dad, he bought it new in '71, with that one the pins just about fall out when I take the stock off the action.

IMHO I don't think what we have to do to a 10/22 to take it apart can be called "field stripping"...... I would hate to do it in the field...... at the range maybe, but almost exclusively at home, at my bench! WAAAAY too many little pieces!

Good on ya for buying a 10/22!

Wise advice if I ever heard it.. I didn't know that little bastard would have had enough force to launch itself into another dimension.. but oh ya.. physics my ass.. its possible...

As for the pins, your going to find a variation of force in all the parts... Ive had some barrels just be able to pull out.. some pins that I really had to lay the punch on.. other pins that just want to fall out.

If your going to punch that pin out anyways to clean it, order a polyurethane one... They make the gun run a bit smoother, and are a joy to hammer back into the receiever... haha...

Thanks for the info guys! I tried tapping them both ways but to no luck. I'll try my luck out this Sunday when I don't have to work. I'm already looking at accessories for my 10/22 :D
