Hey all!

Brought my first ever rifle to a public range yesterday. Was greeted by mother nature by freezing rain! But I was committed and drove over an hour to get there so there was no turning back!

I was using the super cheap Federal 525 packs of .22lr ammo. It worked throughout the shoot great until I had one round that would not extract. Cycling the action and tapping the rifle stock on the table would not loosen it up. From what I could see (through the rain) the extractor ripped through the casing.

I ended up using a cleaning rod to hit it through from the barrel but realized there is probably a better (and safer) way of getting these rounds out of the chamber.

Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

how did you clean the gun before you used it? you know those are shipped/stored with some kind of heavy grease or something?

I had read to do a good clean and lube before shooting. Something about the barrel grease ruining accuracy later on if shot with the grease in.

sorry It's not complete, you can look up 10.22 break in procedure. It's been awhile since I've broken in my 10/22

I have a FTE thread about the 10/22 also
cheers

Depends where he bought it, Not all firearms come greased up, sometimes with a heavier then normal coat of oil yes.

I bought my 10/22 from a retail store (Bass Pro) and it was good to go off the rack, and I put 1000 rounds through in my first outing with it. I do encourage re-oiling up any firearm though (as i have been taught) but firearms generally aren't greased unless in long term storage like the milsurp stuff.

I gave it a simple cleaning. Didn't break the entire thing down though. Might as well do it now since I have to learn somehow! Hopefully you wont see me on here soon asking how to fix it. ;)

Usually a pen knife or small screwdriver can be used to catch the rim and extract it. These things happen from time to time with most 22's.
