I have had a few heavy barrel 10/22 and notice they are
picky about what ammo seems to work best in them,None
like rem. yellowjackets, all like cci blazer, why? is it the
trunciated cone bullet on the the yellowjackets? What do
you folks find is the best performing 22 rd that feeds well
in your HB 10/22.What hollowpoint feeds the best? Thanks

My Heavy barrel does OK with yellow jackets though my buddies carbine hardly cycles them. CCI mini-mags should be worth a try, and for cheaper ammo the red box federal(american eagle) 38 HP grain cycle well and are almost as accurat as h mini-mags. The lighter 31 grain federal were only so-so. Remingon thunderbolt, cyclone and game loads were various degrees of crap in my gun.

I almost exclusively use the stock 10 round mags.

Ive had problems with the blazers, pmc scoremaster and federal gold cup. However, all three I bought from the same supplier which I think has more to do with the problem. Stuff Ive bought from Walmart or elsewhere works fine. Most of the problems were failure to fire, not so much chambering. Velocitors work fine, x-perts, dynapoints, and most cci stuff is fine. Federal Champions function well.

Stay away from truncated cone bullets. I find the 10/22 shaves a bit of the bullet off and can result in a build up of shavings and jamming problems. Dont imagine it helps accuracy either. Im not happy with Remington rimfire ammo at all. Ive had weak loads and a few that Ive felt as Ive fired them. This seems to be across their entire line of rimfire bullets. Talking to people that have used a chrony has seen a big spread in velocity using these bullets. I dont suggest Remington since its not just me. Because of where I live I dont get a lot of choice here.

Stock mags work best.

From what I've read on RFC and from personal experience remington has some quality control issues. The last brick of game loads I bought averaged about 4 misfires due to bad primers per box. I also found them exceptionally dirty and innacurate.

As horkz pointed out truncated points rounds, like the yellow jackets, do not tend to feed wel. If you watch from the ejection port as you slowly cylce the bolt you'll notice that its somewhat of a sharp angle in which the bullet's point contacts the chamber. The cone shape of the yellow jacket tends to jam the round as they transition from that angle to parallel with the chamber. Sometimes they will shave some lead off and sometimes they may miss the feed ramp completely. Like the game loads I also found these not very acurate and dirty. They do seem to do more damage to gophers than regular HP's if you do hit them.

I have tried pretty much any ammo that I could find in my 10/22 and found a few rounds that work well:

1. CCI mini mags. Great acuraccy and clean. The waxed bullets just plain don't fould the bore. I run a wet patch then a dry one through the bore after 1000 rounds and it's clean. I buy these for about $28.00 for 500.

2. CCI Blazers Good acuraccy and relatively clean. THey aren't waxed or copper washed so I normally clean after 500.

3.Winchester Dynapoints. Acurate, clean, and cheap. These were an awesome buy but are absolutely impossible to find now. It's too bad too because I haven't found another good winchester 22 round.

4. American eagle hp. Good acuraccy, not too dirty. The bricks are only 400 rounds though.

5. CCI Velocitors. Best round ever. They are also around the most expensive ever as well.

Every gun has it's own tastes but you may want to give these a try.

Do a test and see which ammo your gun likes best. Usually about 10-15 rounds. Try a variety of ammo; match ammo, plinking ammo, ect. You will most likely find that your low velocity ammo will be by far the most accurate, and your high velocity round can just be plinking ammo.
