Hey there,

I've been reading about there being a 10/22 out there which is chambered for the .22 magnum... but I've never actually seen one for sale at any dealer. I have two questions:

First, is this some sort of a special/custom rifle that is an aftermarket conversion? Also, who happens to sell it and how much do they go for?

Second, can a standard .22LR 10/22 be converted to fire .22 mag? If so, what parts besides the barrel would you need to change on it and where would you get these parts?

Thanks in advance for any info!

I think Ruger stopped making the 10/22 magnum some time ago as there was not many sold. They were run of the mill for while up till a few years ago. They were going for 5 or 6 hundred I think. Pricey when compared to the 10/22.

They had a steel receiver with the same integral ruger bases machined into the reciever as other ruger have. They also came with a 9 rd rotary magazine.

I have heard of people converting their 10/22s to shoot the magnums but there are issues with doing it that you will have to do some research on. Keep in mind that the 10/22's receiver is just aluminum.

I would sign on to rimfire central forums to get more on a conversion.

Thanks for the info, it is much appreciated. I didn't know the receivers were made from a different material... If that is so, then I don't think I'd want to do a conversion of my current .22LR. Too many possible complications for such a small gain in power, realistically speaking.

I'll just put it on the side burner as something to *possibly* acquire in the future (it's just too bad they're not available NIB anymore). Maybe the EE section of this forum will offer a 10/22 Magnum for a decent price at some point in time. Thanks again for your input!

:)

:D Yep, discontinued and now they go for a pretty penny when found. I actually think that someone over on the RFC forum did convert his 10/22 LR into a 10/22 Magnum but it wasn't done by a kit and I don't think it is that easy.

Good luck :D

yes, there is a gew people of RFC who have done what you are talking about but it's not for the faint of heart.

as stated, the major difference is the fact that the recievers are aluminum and steel respectivly.

to covert a 10/22LR into a 10/22M, you need to:

- acquire a 10/22 magnum barrel of some variety
- acquire a 10/22, 77/22, 96/22 magazine chambered in either .22mag, or .17HMR (they are the same).
- make room for the longer magazine by re-locating the trigger group in the reciever
- re-inlet the stock to accomidate the above mod
- address spring rates to compensate for the increased power of the .22magnum.

the reason they didn't sell well were supposedly:

- PRICE!
- feeding issues
- cracked bolts

they do exist, but they command a premuim.

an alternative is one of the aftermarket 10/22 magnums.

i've heard of guys cracking the aluminum alloy recievers from this conversion.

Thanks for the info, bud... I guess I will most definitely stay away from these then! I'm not too fond of the aluminum receiver on my 10/22 even with the .22LR configuration, let alone with the .22 magnum!

I was actually thinking of some day building my own 10/22 receiver out of steel and registering it with the CFC, then building off of that... as they seem ultra-easy to make. It's such a shame that Ruger didn't manufacture a steel receiver for that little plinker to begin with; I'd definitely pay the extra 50$ for it.

Volquortsen still makes guns and receivers. I bought a Ruger one planning to convert to .17HMR but heard that they had feeding issues so I left it in .22WMR. Rimfire sports and Custom in the states had a good selection of stuff for them.

My 10/22 mag kept blowing out the extractor......I put in a Volquartsen and it seemed happy, I had to part with it though to pay for other toys....Wish I didnt, I am still kicking myself.

I have a 10/22 MAG that I put a 17HMR barrel on and a new extractor over a year ago, it's been shooting very reliable ever since! Shot about 200 rounds gopher hunting this weekend without hardly any problems other than the crosshairs on my scope decided to turn about 20 degrees. Any one know about Burris's warranty??
