Ruger 10/22 Tactical

Hey Rick-match grade ammo through a 10/22 probably isn’t $ well spent. I’d suggest CCI Standard Velocity as an option, but test a bunch and see what the results are.
To the question-my goal is to be able to see holes on paper @ the distances I shoot. Anecdotally speaking, at my age and with my eyes, a 4-12 with decent glass=100 yards.

Agree on the above statement about the match ammo. Unless you have a custom barrel that shoots great, expensive ammo does not make sense in a 10/22...
As for the scope... all depends on the distances you shoot. within 50yd, event red dot could do.
Additional information is required on the anticipated shooting target sizes and distances, to properly answer the scope question.

I agree re 'match ammo', too. Especially if your rifle is of 'current manufacture', since consensus is that quality is falling in recent years. If you have a quality replacement barrel I'd still try some CCI-SV if that will cycle the Ruger. And 'match ammo' comes in many flavours, ie brands and grades within brands. I wouldn't buy a brick of any w/o testing several of those various flavours.
As for the scope, get the best you can afford, within reason. I have a $700 Athlon 8-34x56 FFP on a $400 Savage B22FV and getting sub-1/2" groups at 50-yds with SK-RM, an 'entry-level' match-practice grade. I don't shoot matches since there are none within 100 miles of me. And all NB ranges are closed anyway due to 'fire closures'.
PS - My CZ457 VMTR gets 0.3xx" with the same ammo, just a bit better. Generally, semi-actions don't get 'super-accurate' results unless you invest a lot in the equipment.

2-7 is about all you’ll need. Maybe a red dot? Good advice on the ammo above; I usually just grab a variety from the shelf when I get a new .22. you really only need to shoot 5-10 out of a box to do the test IMO. Keep the boxes then when you get another .22 you can repeat the test, if you shoot 5 shoots you can theoretically test 10 times with 1 50 round box.
IMO, to get 'results this rifle is capable of' the more the mag, the better. "Aim Small - Hit Small" - a 6-24x50 in
FFP would be enough to get accurate results, once you get used to the rifle itself. It's all a matter of time spent = better results.

I run 6-18x50 SFP on a 10/22 mounted in a Magpul Hunter X-22 stock with TK Victory Trigger Shoe, TK Rotary Safety, TacSol mag release & Wolff spring kit supported by a Harris bipod. Still undecided on a replacement charging handle....
I've only fed this setup CCI AR Tactical 40GR CPRN so far and it has shot great, next range trip I'll see how it likes eating all the different bulk ammo variants.
To Rick, as Buck stated more magnification the better when it comes to getting the most out of your platforms capabilities.
The factory trigger and plastic stocks on 10/22's are less than desirable, after you change those oh boy it is a wonderful platform to let your OCD run wild with!
Yes, Improving the trigger and stock on a Ruger is a must, from what I've seen. I've never had one, but I went with the 'competition' - a Marlin 60. I've got the trigger on it down around 1# and put a 6-24x56 FFP scope on to get under 1" at 50. My B22-FV & CZ 457 VMTR (Timney @ 6-oz) both are running the Athlon Argos 8-34x56 FFP and I wish I had more mag on the CZ 
Is it a factory Ruger 10/22 with a "tactical" stock?
If so, it's not worth spending extra money on expensive ammo. Just buy some CCI Mini-mags and send it!
As for an optic I love the Primary Arms SLX 1-6 with the NOVA fibre wire reticle. It's a good "do it all" optic. You can shoot at 1X like a red dot with both eyes open or dial in some magnification for longer shots.
If you're shooting under time pressure as "tactical" implies then 6-power or at most 12-power will find your target faster and give you a decent crosshairs on it. If you have lots of time then finding the target in a 24-power scope is good, but that's more bolt-action precision rifle territory.

I wouldn't waste money on match ammo. I cannot even get my 10/22 Target lite to achieve anything smaller than 2 inch 10 shot avg at 100. That changing to a boyds pro varmint stock, bx trigger, bedding and free floating.
50 yards lucky to get 5/8" groups.
10/22 accuracy downfall is the single mounting bolt. That can allow the action to rock in the stock.
I have a 6-24 that might run 18x..i just slapped it on because pops gave me it. Pretty much just use it as a plnker now. I don't like the gun enough to drop a aftermarket barrel on it. When I got guns that shoots better.
