Ruger 10/22 vs Remington 597

Haha I'm with this guy

On another note I own a 597 bone stock with a crappy scope. It Jams with every type of ammo except cci. I was going to sell it and get a 10/22 but If I was to do it again I'd probably just go bolt action.

For now I just stock up on cci.

My reliable 10/22 took a $20 extractor. Bought it for something like $250 15 years ago?
Far cry from 1G
I wonder if the problem is more with the new ones???

My 10/22 feeds federal bulk as fast as I can pull the trigger and using a 110 round drum make is fun

I don't know where this "need a thousand bucks to make it shoot" BS comes from. The only thing I changed on my 1980 10/22 was the trigger. I bought a nice, smooth Timney for $160. The gun worked just fine without the upgrade but the new trigger is nicer & smoother. I did it because I wanted to, not because it "won't shoot".

In terms of accuracy, I will put it up against any other regular, standard semi .22. For those that want to "school me", I shoot in the Hamilton area and would happily take a challenge. Once I get owned, I will graciously return to this thread and eat crow.

Please PM me if you wish to teach me a lesson...

marlin 795 no question, best one i own and have fired and theres been a bunch, mine eats all ammo flawlessly, pro mag makes awesome 25 rd mags that hi cal stocks, and you can shoot extremely tight groups with even budget scopes, or none at all, great rifle for the money in my opinion

read back a bit, see you got the 60 great choice excellent rifle, you will have no regrets more accurate than the 10/22 as well, {in all the little tests we did anyway} and u got more money in your pocket for ammo.....double bonus!!!

I have prefer the 10/22, but I believe the Marlin 795 to be more accurate. Price wise, the Savage 64 is also great bang for your buck....but the magazines can be finicky.

So far so good with my 597. It was cheap so my expectations were low.Had to return it for barrel replacement because the rear sight was so far off center,i coudn't dial it in. Swapped out the factory sights for Williams fire sights when i got it back and took it to the range.Only tried Federal lightnings and cci stingers so far because i had a number of boxes left over from my last .22. I am going to add the the Volquartsen hammer and extractor because it's an inexpensive upgrade but that's as far as it goes. To be honest, most of todays offerings make me seriously regret selling my old marlin 60 and cooey.

10-22 for shorter range 25 round fun

597 for longer range 10 round fun.

The Ruger has many mag options and more aftermarket goodies than you can shake a stick at... The Remington is a solid rifle with a few extra features in the box but has limited aftermarket options and sh###y 30 round mags.

I find the 597 to be more accurate at longer distances. But they are equally reliable.

Buy both... I did.

My 597 has about 10,000 rounds through it and works very well. the 30 round mags are hit or miss, some work perfectly while others will give me the odd failure to feed.
Factory mags are great. I have the Volquarsten hammer in mine which makes the trigger pull very nice.

Apples vs oranges!!!

The 10/22 is a reliable semi, the Remington is a Jam-O-Matic!!!

There are so many opinions and experiences with this, with brand loyalty sometimes creating a bias.

I guess I 'll just add my own, in hopes that it will serve those, who like me, are on a quest to find
your preferred 22LR platform. ( YMMV )

I have had the 3 side by side in a range session and then took them home and took them apart :

10/22
597
795

Here's my experience:

PRICE: 10/22 most expensive, 597 middle , 795 cheapest.
SOPHISTICATION: 597 most features and complex, 795 middle, 10/22 most primitive, but easy to work on.

Overall thing's I noticed:

-Accuracy: Out of the box, the 795 and 597 shot more accurrately for me than the 10/22...with the 597 about the same as 795 for my eyes with the same scope,
bushnell 3x9. I am not sure if it is the guns themselves , or just the way I handle them.. but that was my experience.
-Ergos: The 597 & 10/22 had mags that were flush with the receiver and weightiness that made for more comfortable shooting.
The 795 was considerably lighter and quick handling. The other's had more a bigger gun feel.
-Bonus Features beyond going bang: 597 has a lot of features : last round bolt open, Nicer trigger, telflon coated rails, you can pull back on the bolt carrier knob and it closes action. 10/22 didn't have these.
795 just has the last round hold open.
-Reliability: 597 was more prone to jamming: if the mag was messed or if the dual rails were over tightened.
10/22 had high quality mags both 25 rd and standard rotary mags... and lotsa neat after market accessories .
I had never had any feeding issues with 10/22...but did have a stove pipe,
occassionally with a cold 795and most frequently had feeding issues with 597 ( sometimes 1 jam in box of 100)

So while the 3 share a similar position in the market place, I think they have slightly different offerings.
This is my take as a conclusion.... your's could be different.

A) 10/22 > PRO's: reliable and good if you want to tailor it for your own specialized purposes.
ex: swap trigger, sights, stocks, barrels..... Trigger assembly most simplistic.
CON's: More $$$ outta the box and more $$$ to make what you want of it.
B) 597. > PRO's: out of the box accurate and want big rifle feel ergonomics and with smooth features for plinking: teflon coated rails, last shot hold upon..etc.
CON's: Mags can be a problem, More jam prone.
C) 795. > PRO's : out of the box accurate and want cheap, accurate , light, quick handling.
CON's: not much after market accessories , nor has the features or ergonomics of the 597.

I found them all to be viable .22lr platforms, representing a good baseline of quality.

In the end I kept the 795 as my utilitarian light weight beater 22LR.... something I would ideally hike and hunt squirrels with.
I sold the other 2, BUT bought another 10/22 because it captured my imagination with what I could build with it.
(seemingly limitless)

I have both. The 597 is more accurate than my 10/22. One of the best features of the 597 is the hold open. I cringe every time I dry fire my 10/22 on last round. As for "jam-o-magic" with my 597, she runs like a dream. Hardly ever a stoppage and if it is, it's usually a crappy round. I get the odd FTE, but nothing that would warrant complaints.

I own the 597 and have never shot the 10/22, but have nothing against it. The 597 is a nice rifle, light, easy to handle. It's quite accurate. I like everything about it except for two things;

1. It fails to fire often, with various brands/types of ammo. The rod screws have been tightened, loosened, and everything in between. Still no luck. I shoot American Eagle now (Federal), which it seems to do the best with. I probably have 1 FTF out of every 25 rounds.

2. There are no RELIABLE high-cap magazines for this rifle, that I am aware of. The 30 round Remington mags are junk junk junk. I have 3 of them, purchased over several years. They are all the same, and none of them feed properly. Sometimes I just want to buy a 10/22 so I could shoot many rounds without reloading LOL. With that said, the Remington 10 round factory mags are EXCELLENT.

So if you don't mind regular capacity magazines, I'd go with the 597.

I have owned 3 10/22's, 597, two 64's, a 795, 60. Loved them all, except the 597. All including the 597 were relatively accurate to very accurate, but the Remmy didn't seem well built, had lots of ftf, fte, and I do believe they are easily remedied, but I see no point when the rest were perfect in function when the right ammo was selected. I can count on one hand the number of failures my 10/22 had after over 10000 rds, so I see no excuse for the 597 doing this on a very regular basis.

I had similar experiences in the fall and spring. The dual guide rods seemed to tighten and need adjustment in -20 weather. To me that is the weakness of the design instead of just sliding on rails or 1 guide rod.
