I just bought said rifle yesterday and got out to the range this afternoon. Here are some pics. All shots were at 25m and with open sights using the door of my car as a rest:p . (Wanted to the sights but forgot the drivers at home  ) The first and second were with Remington Thunderbolt II, the last with Winchester Wildcats. Is this normal for a 10/22 and if not what kind of accuracy can one expect out of the rifle???

They should just sell them without barrels. Then we could use the $10 you save and put it towards a good barrel.
That pattern you shot sure looks familiar.... like before I rebarreled mine.
Not much wonder guys are buying the "597". A least remington can make a barrel.

My 10/22s (I have had 3 or 4) all shoot under half an inch at those ranges. I would not use a car door as a rest, very unstable.

Is the gun new? run about 200-300 rounds through it and try it again with a better rest.

Yeah, the rifle is brand new. Those are the first 150 rounds though it. I agree that the car door was not the best spot to rest the rifle on but it was the best I could do as I'm not a member to a range yet (will be soon though).

Grouping looks not to bad for iron sites. You have some nice clusters there. Scoped my newest 10/22 Blu/Syn last weekend and siteing it in knocked the centre out of a 100 benchrest target after dialing it in, all at 25 yrds. Moved to fifty and shot 2 boxs of ammo and it seemed to be getting worse, but we were just playing mostly shooting the bolt gun for groupings. Took a close look on Sat and wondered aloud if I should check action mounting screw. Well if you could grab it with your fingers you probably could have turned it. Never occured to me to check it when mounting the scope. I'm sure it will do better next time out.

I have a stock 10/22 with a Weaver 4X on it and it shoots about 1" to 1.5" groups at 50 yards with most ammo. Your groups don't look to bad for using open sights and not the greatest rest. They may not be the most accurate rifles as they come from the factory, but they are good enough for plinking and gopher sized game out to 75 yards or so. Plus they are the funnest guns ever invented!

Have you had the trigger redone? Factory pull will be in the 7 lb range and I couldn't shoot mine stright either until I had the trigger pull reduced to 3 lbs. Now it shoots very accurately, a few more rounds will also help. It may not be a Brno but its a great semi-auto!

No, i haven't done any work to it. I got the rifle for my daughter so it will more likely stay the way too. I don't need it to be super accurate but enough to teach my girl the proper way to shoot. Got a 50 round clip for it today so I agree that being a auto is a big plus :D.

Few things...
Remington thunderbolts are some of the worst possible .22 ammo, in my opinion.
I got a 2.5 inch group or so at 50 yards with it, scoped. Every .22 is picky, but mine likes federal gameshok(copper coated) or american eagle(just lead). My 10/22 hates all remington ammo except gameloads. Get a bunch of ammo, see what works.

The accuracy on mine increased after firing a brick, and not cleaning, just squirting some oil on the bolt. Much smoother now.

I never did so great with open sights, I prefer scoped. But I never really got into open sights for accuracy, All I ever did was shoot shotshell hulls at 40m or so.

Yeah, i agree that the same rifle/modle will shoot differently with all types of ammo. Mine seems to like the thunderbolt's better than the wildcats but that's all I've tried so far. I will get out this weekend with a srap load of different type to try and figure out what it likes best. Also got a 4x banner that i'm going to put on it, it should get better with that

It is frustrating though to shoot an inacccurate rifle even when you are just learning. I paid only $75 to have the trigger set to a more reasonable pull.

your shooting high to the right...bring the sights down a bit to the left...judgeing form your grouping id sudgest working on your breathing and your trigger pull......fire on the exhale.....use a slow but steady pull on the trigger.....it should be a suprize when the thing goes off...don't release the trigger right away after the shot....wait a second.....also, make sure you have the rifle on teh same spot on your shoulder on every shot. this should tighten your grouping

Range updates

Well I got out to the range last week with kids and got to try out my 10/22 with a 4x banner. It would seem that the rifle is a little more accurate but I think I need to get more practice. I wasn't to worried about hitting center, I was just going for a group.

Those are pretty good groups. A factory 10/22s biggest limitation is its trigger IMHO, but a good rifleman can squeeze out very good groups. Near an inch at 50.

Tweaking will get that down to about.... oh wait I have pics too! I used to chase shotshell hulls around at the 100m point with this one. Group was shot in the pouring rain this past xmas eve.

It just depends on how much you want to pay for it. I ended up selling that one and building a different 10/22.

My current one shoots about 1/2 to 3/4 freehand and I am using a factory barrel and aftermarket iron sights. I built this one to just be a plinker but I did lighten the trigger. I need all the help I can get.

Indeed, and I have been saying and thinking the same for some time now.
