There is a Ruger 10/22 Target for sale in the EE, and I want to know if it is worth it for my first gun?
Here is the link to the gun, about halfway down (search for "Target) http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=463141
(Poster advised me to ask around here)
I want a .22 that I can learn to shoot accurately, and I plan to keep it for a long time. I don't want to make this a tact'ed up gun, but I might consider mods that make it more accurate. I don't know anything about scopes either, so I'll have to learn more and then get one when the time comes.

I want to let my friends shoot it (I have a very liberal group of city friends, none of which have ever fired a gun), so I don't want something that I'll be worried will get damaged. I also might get an SKS just to blow s**t around, but I am on a bit of a budget, and the expensive gun+sks might be a bit much.

So, my overall question is if this rather pricey (when compared to the other guns in that list) 10/22 is something I should invest in? Will the extra cash now be worth it for an accurate gun in the future?

One thing you will have to remember is that you are buying a "used" gun....why are they selling it? how well used is it? What may you have to fix to get it to operate right?

I like the Savage heavy barrel varmint rifle in .22. the accu-trigger is a definite asset and a bolt gun is normally more accurate than a semi. You have to decide whether to buy someone's used, questionable, expensive gun or invest in a new model that out of the box may prove itself accurate..

i have bought many used guns and a few were returned to seller and a few were worth the repairs that they needed. And a few needed TLC. best yet was a 1940 Marlin 81 that shoots long ( 150 yards plus) field distances accurately. Never at a 50 yard target. Wonder how it would do there?

Oh, s**t, I meant to include the link... Above post edited.

In this case, the gun is NIB. For a .22, I think I want a new, pristine gun. I do appreciate the advice though, and I will take it to heart, as I do plan to get some used guns in the future.

I don't think I would consider that model a target.... a ruger target model has a spiral bull heavy barrel on it. If it were me I would buy a base model and put a Dlask barrel on it. Would be plenty accurate compared to factory and not break the bank.

i do agree that a target rifle is much better with a bull barrel. the fancy stock does not a target model make. And stick with a bolt action as they are literally bullet proof and much safer for the newbies that may be handling it.

Ruger 10/22T

I own one. Very accurate. Have an old Weaver V15 scope on it for small bore metallic silhouette. You can buy a std. 10/22 but cannot use the heavy bblls. from the many aftermarket souces as the barrels will not fit in the stock. For all the cost of assemblage of a custom 10.22 target, take the factory produced model. It will not let you down and give good value for your money.

Ruger 10/22 Target Tactical!!!!
This is the only way to go and cheaper than a build! $550 from P&D, but I have seen it for sale at Lebarons for $500.

I have tried ruger 1022T and wasn't too impressed. Trigger wasn't anything target-ish, stock was cheap plastic thing with cheaply made adjustable cheek weld - that is about it. I agree with someone recommending Savage MkII instead. For the money Savage is unbeatable. Buy one with heavy barrel just to accertain the best accuracy out of factory rifle.

Thanks very much guys.
I don't think I'll be going with this one, as I will get a more accurate one later, and for now, I want something I can drop and not cry over. All the advice was great.

I think I'm gonna go get an SKS and cheapo .22, then build up from there. Plans after that are shotgun, then a good .22, and then probably an 858, because, well, why not.

First gun, maybe tomorrow? I'm rather excited.

Thanks again.
