I'm not sure if I got the right placve to post this, but I have a few questions about the 405.

I just ordered a #1H in 405 Winchester, and am looking forward to shooting, loading, and maybe even killing something with it. I have been reloading since about 1975, so that tells you I am OLD! :)

I will be buying some of the Hornady loaded ammo for this at a Canadian Tire store and shooting it to get used to it, then I will be sticking some loads together.

Question #1: Do any of you guys reload for the 405?
Question #2: Is there a supplier of bullets in Canada that you are aware of, and if so, who?
Question #3: Do any of you that load have any pet loads to share?
Question #4: Is there anywhere in Canada that I can acquire a bullet mold for this calibre?

Thanks in advance, and I appreciate your time.

No offense intended, but I dont think you'll track down 405 winchester at your local Canadian tire unless they've had it in stock for 50 years.
Its a very rare caliber, even though it has been reintroduced. Odd Diameter bullet, and As far as I know, you cant form the brass from anything else.

I was looking into a 405 myself when Winchester reintroduced them. But components were expensive, and bullets and brass are hard to get. I know Hornady is loading them, but I dont think that there will be much factory available ammo in Cda to start with. You might be loading right from the get go...

Im looking forward to hearing about it, I still want one :)

Thanks for all the notes of encouragement. The CTC store in Kenora has both the FP 300 grainers and the SP 300 grainers available from Hornady. They are a little pricey, but when one considers the price of brass and the bullets, it is not too bad. The reason they stock the loaded ammo is because they have a couple #1's in Stainless Laminate for sale.

The Wholesale Sports store has all the components available including RCBS dies and shell holder, brass, bullets. Now, as far as selling the thing cheap, BigUgly, at least let me get it under my roof for a day or two, and try it out. This is a number of dreams rolled into one -- a No.1 Tropical -- a big bore -- an older cartridge.

I had considered the 416 Rigby in #1H as well, but the loaded ammo for that one was running $125/20 at the CTC store in Kenora as well. And he stocks bullets for reloaders in both bore diameters -- .411 and .416. Go figure -- a jerkwater town like that with an inventory in the CTC store in excess of 1million bucks -- firearms only.

Hopefully by the end of next week, I'll be slinging big ugly bullets downrange.:D

I just heard back from the Wholesale Sports Mail Order desk, and the rifle is backordered with no indication on how quick I can get it. Grrrrrrr! Any other suggestions for a place for me to look for one. Forget importing one from the states. That takes about a half a lifetime of red tape, and I am already over a half a lifetime old.

LMFAO, you roll your eyes at the "note of encouragement" above when we were trying to give you the skinny on the gun and ammo availability.
Now, you cant even get the gun... :) let alone ammo :)
The irony...
Im not trying to be an AZZ, but I find it funny.

I hope you get it, but dont get discouraged when someone tries to give you the straight goods.
I allready looked into this, when Boddington did an article about it in Africa before it was commercially available.
Its an incredible cartridge with an INCREDIBLE marketing past. How often does the PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES endorse a round, and gun? (Im talking aboutthe 1895, not the ruger)
Big Medicine is hard to get pills for even if Hornady is making brass and ammo...
I've got a 7.35 carcano. try finding bullets for it :)
you have to turn individual 308 bullets down to work...
so needless to say, I havent played with it much, but have 40 rounds of ammo for it.

Rockchucker has been shooting one of these for a year or so, and doing some pretty incredible things with it to boot. .405 supplies are not hard to get anymore, if fact twice I have gone through .405 setups including dies, brass, bullets and so on. His #1 is putting 300s out over 2600fps. It's quite the northern bear and moose rifle and you don't see ten of them at every shoot.

Casull, your a bit different when it comes to this kind of thing.
Lets go over some of the guns you've built over the years... :)

It seems that "Impossible to get" is a hobby of yours. ;)

Im not trying to discourage him, just pointing out tht its not a "Canadian tire round" as once thought

405 Win.

I've had my Ruger #1 for just over a year now and I'm not entertaining the sale of the rifle. :D
Hornady FP & spitzers 300gr. bullets are readily available from Higginson. Hornady makes some great brass available from Epps a bit pricey but still available.
Have been playing a bit with cast bullets not too seriously yet but thats next summers project. Had a custom mould made by Mountain Moulds. I decided on a Trunciated cone design that weighs in at 350gr using wheel weight lead.
Under $100 US and you design the mould using their software. :)
I've tried quite a few powders but settled on Varget as the powder of choice. Cranking out the 300gr. Hornady at over 2600fps without loosing any cases to excessive pressure thanks to the strong #1 action. The load will cut cloverleafs @ 100mtrs if I do my part.:D
Looking forward to testing the rifle and load on a spring bear hunt this year.

It really depends on where your CT is. I know of at least two shops in our little town that have 405s in stock as well as at least two others in town using this round though not in #1s. Rockchucker's rifle by the way is factory, we did not build it. Lucky for him.
I look forward to watching him run one of those .405s through a bear or two in the spring. But to be honest, I think more of the old .45/70 in the same rifle. It will out perform the .405 with any bullet weight and doesn't get near the credit it deserves out of a Ruger #1 or #3. It needs to be called .458 Ruger or something to get attention I guess. Sure flattens moose and bears, I know this for sure.

RockChucker,

Is your #1 a tropical, and if so, where did you get it, and can another one be had. The CTC store has them in a stainless laminate, but I do not want that. I far prefer a walnut blue - more classic look. And the ammo availability is not a big deal. CTC sells them and has several boxes of each of the factory stuff, and bullets by both Hornady and Barnes.

I could buy a #1 H in stainless, in the same CTC store, but I want blue. So my eyes are still kinda rolling.

So . . . . . . the ammo is not a problem. And neither is the rifle . . . . IF I want stainless. Just don't, is all. :D

Call me an Ontarioite, Our crappy tires sell your basic top 20, and thats it. I havent seen 45-70 shells in a crappy tire in years. When I bought the guide gun, I told my dad that you could get shells anywhere. And low and behold, there were only two places I could find local at the time that stocked 300 gr's. Lebarons, and Williams.
Crappies, wallymart, gagnons, accuracy etc. didnt have much for the 45-70 if anything. But than again, that was the year Marlin introduced it, and it wasnt as popular up here as it has been in the last 6-7 years. Though the 45-70 didnt ever go away, Marlin really created the resurgence. and your right, a 45-70 is a different beast in an bolt action/ singleshot ruger.

A 500gr hardcast @ 1860 fps out of an 18.5 inch barrel isnt anything to scoff at.

I cut a deer fawn in half literally with a factory 300 gr JHP this year with it, and couldnt have imagined shooting a deer with a 500 at basically the same speed as the 300.

Every now and then a Canadian Tire store hires a sporting goods manager with a brain. The store on Isabel in Winnipeg used to have a good gun shop, and took trades etc, but I don't know if that's still the case or not. Maybe it's the same guy in Kenora?? The store in Kenora advertises in the Access.

I wouldn't scoff at any gun shooting 500s at 1860fps., that'll kill anything on this continent with no trouble.
I went to school in Halifax in the late 80s and there was a CT in Dartmouth N.S. that carried lots of interesting guns and traded and had hides on the wall.
In a .45/70 my choice would be 400s at about 1900-2000fps. for the 86(the Marlin will do the same) or 350s faster out of a Ruger single.

I have a mould for some 340 gr Hardcast HP's, but havent casted any yet...
I gotta try em, I've had the mould for over a year, and havent used it.
