Guys, I just bought a new Ruger 22/45 mark 3 target from Wanstalls and I'm very confused. It's pretty dirty, as if I had shot about 50 rounds of 22 with it.
Does Ruger test fire these pistols before shipping them out to their retailers or is something fishy going on here?

Every Ruger pistol is test fired once and they include the spent casing with the gun. There should be no residue or dirt or anything else in or on the gun.

Yah well I guess I bought a "new" used pistol for the price of a new, well that's the last frigging time I get screwed like that. I'm putting my finger in the chamber next time in front of the sales guy and if it comes out dirty then he has some explaining to do. I'm not happy at all, not because it was fired before, heck I never slept with a virgin either, and those bull Rugers are tough; but now I don't know if it was dry fired a ton, and I have no idea if the previous dude played with the sights and stuff.

Have you contacted Wanstalls? I've only dealt with them online, but I have had great customer support from them.

Yah I called them about 15 minutes ago and they said its normal that it would be that dirty. I dunno, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this one...
But I'm still surprised that it was that dirty!

From what I've read....Wanstalls is a straight up class operation. If there's no signs of wear or damage I wouldn't be concerned about a .22 be dirty.
Post some pics for your new Mk3!

I purchased the same model in the past and it had some grey/black grease in it. I thought originally the same as you, but after I looked closer it just appeared to be the color of the packing grease they used.

take a good look at the bolt
if the bluing is worn on the bolt, it has been fired
the more blue wear, the more it has been fired

I suspect that the factory test firing would involve a half or full magazine and not just one round. There's no way to check for proper operation from only firing ONE ROUND. It would require at least a half a magazine's worth.

And ditto on the amount of wear to the finish on the bolt. If the bolt looks new and shiny with barely any marks then the gun is "new"

My own factory new 22/45 had a few light scuffs from assembly and cycling the bolt as well. By the time I'd put just a few magazines through it at the first outing the bolt looked like someone had been using coarse sandpaper on it. So unless it looks like that then it's new as it's going to get. And it's not going to stay that way for very long unless you bag it and keep it safely in your safe.

EDIT- A little warning for you. The hinge pin at the front of the rear sight tends to not be staked in very well. There are LOTS of stories about the pin walking out and leaping away to freedom never to be seen again. Use a paper clip or other fine wire to push on it. If it slides out with only light pressure like I think it will then put a couple of small and slight kinks in the middle then push it back in. If you can barely see the kink in the middle of the wire that's just right. The force needed to hold the wire straight when back in will retain it.

Mine was half way out on about the second or third magazine worth of shooting. I finished the evening watching for it moving again and it kept coming out about 2 or 3mm per magazine. It was simple enough to keep pushing it in and keep shooting but it needed fixing obviously.

I bought a new cz american. I found out it had been sold and returned, then sold to me as new. The owner knocked 25 bucks off when i confronted him. It was the last one in perfect condition so i bought it. When the owner was on the phone , the guy who owned it for a day came up to me and told me it was an accurate shooter. He had just traded it in minutes before i came through the door. I wonder if the cfo could or would be able to check if a firearm had been sold before?
