Does anyone else have one? Likes/dislikes?

Is it going to make me want to sell my Ruger MkII 5.5" bull barrel?

I was thinking of getting one, preferably the stainless one since all my pistols are blued and I need some variety! I will most likely get the blued since its cheaper though, where did you pick it up and for how much if you dont mind my asking?

Damn you :p
Everytime someone posts about the 22/45, I get an urge to go buy one!
(and unfortunatly, the gun budget is not in the best of health at the moment:redface: )
NAA, I would have thought that with your love of 1911s, you'de have had one of those puppys a long time ago?

I just got one from Whoesale Sports. It's great but I wish the grips were removable like the regular 22. Does anyone know if aftermaket grips are available or will be. The ones one it are a little narrower than a regular 45. If not I'm still glad I ordered the gun. It shoots great.

As far as I know, the only after-market grip option for 22/45 MKIII's are to dremel down the existing grips and then slap on a set of 1911 grips. There's a post on rimfirecentral on how to do it.

Oh, and I have the 4.5" barrel version and love it, but it would be nice if you didn't have to always depress the slide stop to release the bolt, ie just pulling back on the 'slide' (bolt) and releasing it.

I have the exact same model.

1) Get a sear and trigger kit, and get rid of the god awful factory 100lb trigger
But. be prepared to have to play with the pins to get them to stay back in. I had to play with it quite a bit to get them to stay in after I did the complete strip down. (steps on some internet sites)

2) Grips are permanant (unless you want to do the dremmel/1911 grip)

3) It's a nice little pistol for the price

4) get used to taking it apart, once you get the hang of it. it's a piece of cake for cleaning

5) there are a lot of little "tweaks" you can don that are listed on various sites etc.

6) The magazine safety can be very annoying.

7) the built in trigger lock, can only be engaged when the hammer is cocked, so there is no way to store it with the hammer forward (release tension on the spring) and use the factory trigger lock (key and screws in on the side of the grips)

yeah I have one in Stainless. Have maybe 10K rounds through it. You might want to get some blue locktight as the front site gets loose. Accuracy has been great. I find it functions best with jacketed ammo. But it isnt that picky.

I've used the remington yellow jackets, and there are is a problem with feeding the first round (make sure the round is not "nose down" in the mag. There is a bit of play with the angle, make sure it's pointed "up" as possible.
Since the yellow jackets have a small flat nose, it catches right in the middle of the ramp edge, and hangs up.

Yeah, been asleep at the wheel I guess... Thought about picking up a used one off the EE here but when/if they come up for sale they don't seem to last long. Managed to get a MkII bull barrel last year & really enjoy it. But I do prefer the 1911 grip angle. ;)

I *had* both a MKII 22/45 (P512) and MKIII 22/45 (P45GCMKIII). I resently let the MKII go. I LOVE the MKIII. Makes the MKII look totally chunky, which is unheard of, being a Ruger and all.

:D

and +1 on the lock-titing of the front sight. Same deal with the MKII. Remove the screw and do some cleaning. A Q-tip and rubbing alcohol work well. Dry it out and dab some blue lock-tite in the thread hole. Let sit at least 12 hours prior to shooting.

What's the diff between a MKII and MKIII? Also will this gun work for a leftie? Once the CFC gets off their A$$ and sends me my PAL this is the gun I'm leaning towards.

I also had a 22/45 in Stainless way back... I sold it and vowed to get a blued one if I ever did again (scratches always very noticeable on stainless) ;)

Aside from that it was pretty fun.

But I would highly recommend changing the extractor to a Volq. Exact Edge extractor. I do this for every Ruger .22 as I find it adds alot to the reliability, after that you are good to go.

P.S. I think the MKIII's have a mag safety so that you cannot shoot unless there is a magazine inserted, correct?

Great little gun, very accurate. I had a lot of issues at first. Fails to eject, first round not loading, light firing pin strikes.
I had to install a Volq extractor. I also disabled the loaded chamber indicator. It would cause the gun to fail to feed once it got dirty (extra resistance when feeding I suppose). Had that same problem with the angle on the first round in the mag. Switched to a cone shaped bullet (bulk federal 525 pack) instead of round nose and its not an issue anymore. Also swapped out the firing pin spring for a weaker one. Now I bet I can fire 1000 rounds without a single issue and its as accurate as heck.

I have the stainless 512 ..its a great gun..I too had first round loading issues..I solved that by only loading the mag in when the bolt was in the open position....that being said I also have a browning buckmark its roughly the same price as the 22/45 and it feeds and shoots without a problem...my ruger is a bit picky when it comes to ammo ..but the browning eats anything from cheap to high end ammo

Well, my Ruger 22/45 arrived a few days ago... :)

So, I thought I had ordered the 5 1/2" bull barrel model:

But I really ordered/received the 4 1/2" slab side barrel model:

Apparently, the 4 1/2" barrel model is the same overall length as the 1911 pistol. Yes, the grip is a little slimmer than a real 1911. Fits my 'on-the-large-side' hands quite well, though. And I really like the 3-dot fixed sites.

Hoping to try it out this weekend... range report to follow...

I have that exact same model and LOVE it. The other MKII 22/45's are also as slim. I found this lil pistol to group very well with it's fixed sights, mine is shooting POA @ 20yards. You'll be happy. :D

Hi folks,

I am going to resurect this thread, but with another view.

I am thinking to getting a Ruger MKIII as well, but there are different models and do not know which one to pick.

It is going to be used for target plinking mostly.

Can anybody please suggest and point me in choosing the right one?

Thanks
