Hi folks - Posted this in pistols, and got no great response, so I'll try here. I think the people who own Desert Eagles must have been intimidated, kind of like all those guys in their ferraris feel un-manned when I pull up alongside in a baby seat-laden minivan: I know who REALLY has all the virility...

Anyway, I digress:

I had an absolute HOOT up at the range the other day, running some "practical" drills with my 22/45 MkIII. Mag changes were slow, as they all had to be tactical reloads (I wonder: Can the mags be engineered to drop free?), but it was so much fun, I burned up all my ammo in about half an hour.

So: Anybody got any suggestions for holster & mag pouches? I see that Fobus makes a holster for the "regular" Ruger rimfire pistols, but nothing listed for the 22/45. And mag pouches...?

I found this range trip really was awesome to get back to basic defensive pistol skills, and as we all know: CHEAP on ammo!!! Gonna keep this up! Maybe I'll start a league?

:)

First off, welcome to the "proper" forum - Rimfires! :)

Secondly, how'd you blow all your ammo in a 1/2 hour? At least 1 brick is needed, per session...:D

Third off, as for a league - ACTION 22....;)

How about these:

The Kydex holster for a glock 26/27 is rumoured to fit a "standard" Ruger 22/45 (http://ww w.opticsplanet.net/picture-1-uncle-mike-25.html)...

For Uncle Mike's, the "size 5" has been suggested (http://ww w.builderdepot.com/seo/UNCLEMIKES_15/288644_Cordura_Hip_Holster_w_Mag_PouchSize_5.ihtml)

Note to mods: I posted those URL's, in haste, for the pictures. Please delete if you see fit. :D

I am going to look into getting one of these shipped up to me from the US.

Since my Ruger MKIII hunter has a 6 7/8 barrel that is only a inch or two shorter than a 4inch 22/45 with a smaller can (ie AAC Pilot) or something.

Would make a kick ass holster and he says he can make them to any length. Definatly something I will be geting in the near future.

Scotty,
The Battlecloth holster is definitly the way to go. Ordered one last year and it's a great way to carry your rig and keep it clean. Fits my 22/45 hunter perfectly.

Yes, the mags can drop free.
It is not about mag re-engineering,
but about replacing the little torsion spring and the diconnecting plate
with a small bushing (spacer).
This will also disable the annoying feature "fire only with the mag in".
It is a 10 min job.
PM me if you want to do that mod.

Would love to see this mod too.

I am really enjoying my franken 22/45 but would like to a few problems fixed.

My mags will pop out but the base hits the bottom of my palm and stops. I am going to make some grips for more comfort and mag an enlarged mag well to help keep my palm out of the way.

Also, the bolt stop doesn't work. Manually pulling back the bolt it works 100% but fire it, very very rarely does it hold open.

Any thoughts?

There used to be a company that made 1911 style extended bits for safety and bolt release. Don't see them in business anymore. Anyone know if someone else is making these parts?

Is there such a thing as rimfire IPSC?

Jerry

Volquartsen sells quite a few Mk3 aftermarket thinghies.
They sell (among other things)
extended mag releases and bolt releases
but they don't look very "1911-style" to me.

How to do
DROP FREE MAGS FOR 22/45 Mk3

On Mark 2, the trigger mechanism works like this:

mk2triggerani.gif

On Mark 3, they put a spring and a disconnecting plate (that part in yellow)
so it cannot fire without the mag:

mk3triggerani.gif

So, if you remove the feature "fire only with the mag in",
your mags will drop free (and they will insert much easier),
because you will replace some parts that keep pressure on the mags.
Also, stripping/assembling will be much easier.

So, to do this, you have few options here. Choose one:

The method of Mk2 bushing in the Mk3 hammer:

You have to remove these 3 parts:
-hammer-bushing (or pin, or pivot),
-disconnecting plate, and
-spring
and replace them with a Mk 2 hammer-bushing.

The Mk2 hammer-bushing looks like this:
338-mkii-bushing.jpg

You can get it from Clark Custom:
http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/22pts.htm#ruger
(I think you need CLK-517)

or from Volquartsen:
https://www.volquartsen.com/category/16-action-trigger-components/4-mkiimkiii

In a nutshell, this is it:

OR

The DIY1 method
(or the ghetto/welfare/recession method)

You can do this mod in the kitchen.
This method was used by hundreds (if not thousands)
of 22/45 Mk3 owners in US.
It may look complicated, but it's very easy.
Once you find the right washers, it takes 10 min.

You have to:
-keep the original Mk3 hammer-bushing (pivot),
-eliminate both the spring and the disconnecting plate,
-make something (a spacer) that will eliminate the side-play that
is created by the removal of the above 2 parts.

For the spacer, you can successfully use 2 washers.
Before going to HomeDepot to buy washers,
measure the outside diam of the hammer bushing
and make sure you take along the calipers AND the hammer bushing.

Remember this when looking for washers:
the inside diameter of the washers has to be
as close as possible to the outside diameter of your original Mk3 bushing.
Think of it as a very close fit, similar to a slip-fit.

Don't worry now about the outside diameter of the washers,
because you will modify that anyway, as you will see farther down.

This is how you make the spacer:
After you find the 2 washers with the right inside diam,
start to file them like this:

MKIIIhmrwashermod1.jpg

MKIIIhmrwashermod3.jpg

MKIIIhmrwashermod7b.JPG

MKIIIhmrwashermod8.jpg

MKIIIhmrwashermod9.jpg

Again, make sure the washers' ID is very close to the bushing's OD,
because this is very important.
If the washers are too lose on the Mk3 hammer-bushing,
then the flats of the first washer will not prevent against rotation,
and that washer can get out from under the step of the hammer,
and it may rotate and can/will jam the hammer or sear (or both).

OR

The DIY2 method
(like I did, if you have access to a lathe).

I took the rough dimensions and I went slowly, trial and error.
I made a spacer
that is nothing else than a stepped bushing (and without flats)
that slips on the existing Mk3 hammer-bushing.
It does exactly what the washers do
(but me, I was too lazy to file washers).
I don't have a picture of mine, but it is a hybrid between
the Mk2 bushing method and the washer method. That's it.

Et voila. You have drop free mags now.
(And you also get rid of that ridiculous "fire only with the mag in",
that is annoying not only when shooting,
but also when stripping/re-assembling).
It will also make your gun operate much more lean/clean/easy.

Choose whichever of the 3 methods you like.
The pics above are shamelessly stolen from the net.

If you go to a gunsmith and ask him to do any of these mods for you,
he will say NO, because it is a huge liability for his business,
as the feature "fire only with the mag in"
is legally supposed to be a safety thing.
(For the same reason a lot of gunsmiths
are very reluctant to do trigger jobs, etc.).

About the bolt stop, I am not sure what to say.

I would start with checking:
- the tab (mag button), it may be worn, broken, etc. (unlikely),
but anyway, check its interaction with the bolt stop bar,
- the little detent pin and its spring (see if they are too stiff or too sticky),
- the interaction between the bolt and the bolt-stop
(the bolt-stop may be worn or sompin - and if so,
then maybe the angle of the bolt-stop's hook/lip
is positive instead of negative and it can't hold the bolt,
or maybe it has a burr or sompin).

Whatever you do, if you stumble (on the net) upon the
modification called the slingshot mod,
do not automatically jump into it,
because that is not your problem, at least the way as I see things.

For 22 IPSC talk to Gothmog. They do tactical 22 semi rifle
and they were also talking about introducing 22 pistol as well.
Check this (location, dates, updates, etc.):
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=150216

But if the pistol goes the way they do rifle, somebody like me
should better be prepared for a difficult course,
like shooting pins from 30 yds or so, on the run and timed
and probably facing other harrasment as well :p

The Uncle Mikes #5 is a decent fit to the Ruger.
Picked one up the other day and spent an hour with it at the range yesterday.. not bad at all.
Just need to grab a couple mag pouches next.

As far as the issue with the bolt stop,
I just did the "slingshot mod" to my new 22/45.
Easy enough to do, simply remove the detent ball and spring, and it works just fine.

That one may already be worn to the point of not catching during normal operation where the bolt cycles with considerably more force than by hand.
Check the surfaces for wear.

Otherwise... x2 what Dr Lector already suggested.
