Does any body have any experience with this caliber in a ruger rifle with 20" barrel. Also wondering what weight of bullets that are being used with it. For some reason I seem to be interested in this rifle/caliber combo which could lead to another expense.

The 416 Ruger is a great cartridge. I shoot 350 Barnes Tsx bullets out of mine. I rebarreled an old tang safety 338 mag. The Hornady brass is decent too. Good choice!

i was using the 300 gr barnes X @ 2750 and the the 350gr around 2550-2680. But with the 300gr makes this an easy 300yd rifle... the 416 ruger is a great cartridge

I had one. The hogge stock was terrible, it had the worst trigger I have ever encountered, fixed that, the feed lips were so sharp that you would cut your fingers when loading and damaged the brass, fixed that. Safety was almost unusable was so stiff, fixed that. Action was terribly rough, fixed that.
Loved the cartridge, hated the gun, so I sold it.I had thought about putting a mcmillan on it, and keeping it. But the cost was to much.
I would like to have one built on something that is not a ruger. Maybe a rem700

I like my guide gun, but if you are hand-loading you have to be aggressive. I used early data - 73 grains of powder, and it chronographed a 400 grain nosler partition at 1,950fps - down in 45-70 territory. The factory ammo (out of a 23" African barrel) books at 2,400fps, which is a lot better. Since then people have reported loads up above 78 grains (I forget the powder, and I am STILL at the office), which might give a bit more kick. Whether it'll ever chrony to book speeds, someone please tell me.

Still, I was out in grizzly country in northern BC last week (with a mag stuffed full of factory ammo) and I slept well with that gun next to me. Yeah the factory stock is probably too grippy, and I did have to spend 20 minutes with a dremel, polishing the feed ramp and feed lips, but she's butter smooth now and is more accurate than any elephant gun ever needs to be.

I like the Ruger action: controlled-round-feed and a bullet-proof three-way safety. In fact, I traded from my Remington 700 in .375H&H for the Ruger Alaskan, and never looked back.

I've got the m77 African in 416 Ruger. I had feed problems to start with. ..ruger took quite a long time to repair it.
I then dropped it off at Corlanes to do a bedding job with pillars, rework the trigger and install a proper recoil pad. I also mentioned to Travis( my gunsmith ) about the feed issue and the floor plate latch.
The rifle feeds so smooth now that I keep checking to see if it picked up the round.
Been shooting 400 gr DGX and 400 gr partitions, both are under an inch at 100yds.
So far I've only shot at one animal with this rifle , a large black bear this morning...broad side 80 yards with the 400 DGX,....through the shoulders, not even a twitch.
Now that a few bugs are worked out I absolutely love this rifle.:d
