Any thoughts on the Ruger Mini-30. I may not be in the right forum. Figured may get some better opinions in here. Seeing the price of ammo I can't go wrong to get a gun to shoot in that calibre.

SKS>Mini Thirty

OK, I've never even seen a mini thirty in real life, but I wouldn't pay more than a case of surplus to have a rifle to shoot surplus. A vz58, being the exception.

Had a Mini-30. I found the SKS, specially the Russkie refurbs available everywhere (it seems) to be a better rifle for shooting surplus ammo for plinking, even informal target shooting like 200 meter gongs.

You can buy 4 SKS for the price of one Mini 30. IMO, the design of the SKS is better...

Mini 30 is $900, and you will void your warranty if you shoot steel cased surplus in it. Lots do, but some have problems, the extractor wasn't made to handle the steel.

i thought the min thirty was restricted, i remember them pushing for it anyway when Marc Lepine, pulled the big one with his mini 14.
