ruger 77/17 crap accuracy

I just bought a new ruger 77/17. the better one with the 24 inch barel and gun metal grey stock. Bought it because i though it would shoot better then all my friends much cheeper 17cals.

Thing does not shoot worth a darn!!! Tried 5 diffrent kinds of ammo and had the gun out with my friends CZ. We shot groups with our own rifles then switched rifles and shot again. Both using same ammo from the same box. Every time he shots groups half the size or less then my ruger groups!!!!!

With a 10 shot group i always have at least 2 flyers and the CZ never had any all day. With a ten shot group I shot two flyers then it will soemtimes mike a nice group of four almost touching, then suddenly it will group four more touching or almost touching but they will be up up and over like a half inch from the first group of four. Then sometime i will shoot a five shot group with hornaday ammo and all five will be touching. five min later i shot a five shot group and there is 1 flyer. two close to eachother then two more over a half inch. Diffrent times it shoots diffrent places with the same ammo????

this gun si shooting all over the place. 1.5 inch groups at 50 yards all the time and the cz that was half the price shoots .5 to .75 every time i pick it up.

the cz had a 130 doller 3x9 scope and i have a brand new bushnel 5x15 3200 with front paralax.

how many "new type" of rounds do you run through before you start counting shots for a group? with my savage, i basically clean, run a box of 50 just to get the barrel innards seasoned, and then start shooting a box or two for "groups"

I have the same gun and mine tends to group better when the barrel is a little dirty. I typically leave it that way until my group size starts opening back up. I clean it, and then start the process over again. 20-30 shots to dirty the barrel and I am good to go for a while.

My son has a 77 in 17 and it is very accurate. I don`t recall the type of ammo we were using, though.

My buddy just got his 2 months ago and after 100 rounds she is a ragged hole for five shots at 100 yards.

If it doesnt tighten up i'd check in order; the sights/scope to ensure they are solid, then the action screws, they may not have been torqued properly from the factory. Lastly I'd check the crown and maybe even slug the bore to make sure the muzzle end isn't overbore and that there are no tight spots under the roll stamp etc.

Tighten the scope rings and mounts down. Tighten the stock screws. Clean the barrel from the chamber to the muzzle. Inspect rifling in outdoor light looking into muzzle (strong light) following each rifling to the end. Hope things look good to you.

OP, That has been my exact experiance with every single bolt gun I have ever tried made by Ruger. Centre fire, rim fire, you name it, all have been crappy shooters out of the box. This is not based on one or 2 rifles, but on 10 rimfires and 14 bolt guns, from .223 to 7 em em.....

Now don't be calling me a Ruger hater. I currently have 6 10/22s and several Ruger revolvers in the stable.

I have friends who swear by their Ruger bolt guns. It has not been my experiance that they are any good.......

checked the scope rings four times, action screws are all tight. Think i will start by trying i diffrent scope. Usually if its a problem with pressure points between barrel and stock it will string not scatter bullets every were. The way the point of impact will change randomely and some times group in one place then start grouping an inch over the other way makes me think something is moving in the scope. It is a brand new scope but you never know what happned to it before you get it.

if scope is not the issue i will try putting something between the barrel and stock to put a pressure point in there and see if that helps the consistancy. then i will know if its a pressure point or not.
