Has anyone had their 77/22 (or 10/22) stock barrel re-worked?

What I mean by re-worked is to have the barrel shortened slightly at the breach and re-chambered with a match chamber and new extractor cuts made.

Any info on improvement in accuracy, cost and a gunsmith who can & will do this is appreciated.

Cheers.

I think you would be pissing in the wind. You would have to cut off quite a bit to have enough meat to cut a new dovetail....maybe too much to make your 18.5" requirement.

For accuracy improvements, try different ammo, try bedding, try a timney - a quality aftermarket barrel.

The match chamber is a good idea but it requires a new/different barrel if you want to use the clamp system of installing the barrel.

Have a look at this guys website.

He does all that sort of stuff, bolt tightening and setback of the barrel, If you want my opinion...it is not worth the money, use the gun as is, or get a better rifle.

I used an Anschutz 54 barrel, cut the old chamber off, chambered using a match 22 LR reamer, fitted the barrel snug and made the extractor cuts and then Loctited the barrel in place. Did the trigger to a crisp 2 pounds. Glassed the tang, the front of the action and up to the rear sight boss. It shoots way better than the original barrel.

I have a 77/22 laminate stainless and it was to heavy to be shot in Hunter class sillhouette so it was off to the gunsmith for some chopping. I had the barrel cut down 2 inches and about 40 thou shaved off the original contour. It was then free floated and the action was glass bedded. Trigger had already been done so that was about it. It shot considerably better but in the end it still wouldn't hold a candle to my cz 452's. They are 1" 100 yard rimfires with nothing more than trigger jobs and high quality fiocchi ammo. The 77/22's need alot of work (like guntech's) to be competetive with anschutz or cz. I have also heard of people shimming the bolt halves in order to reduce headspace. Try CCI ammo if you havn't already, they have thick rims and generally shoot a little better than othe popular brands in Rugers.

The reason I posted is because at the Rimfire central site it seems this work is commonly done to 10/22s in particluar & also the 77/22s. Folks there say it works wonders and is well reviewed. My rifle has a match trigger sear and is bedded & floated, but is not a consistently accurate shooter like my other rifles. I really like the rifle, but it just doesn't shoot like my CZ or Remington 541 (& I've shot it alot). I'm not a serious target shooter, but I'm just picky when it comes to accuracy.

I gather that the barrel is cut and set back at the breach approx 0.1-0.2 inches and then a new "tighter" chamber and extractor slots cut.

I don't know first hand, but the Rimfire Central folks say when "done right", you just need to add a shim at the dovetail and everything fits neatly back together with MUCH improved accuracy. They also say it is better value and accuracy than most "after market" barrels... and keeps the factory look. Some folks have the barrel re-crowned too.

Thanks for your interest. Cheers.
