Ruger 77/22 SS/Syn., in 22 lr or 22mag

I am not particularily fond of the Ruger bolt action rifles. Reason being from what I have seen they are hit and miss. I have seen some very good shooting rugers, but I have also seen some very poor shooting ones. As far as reliability goes I would imagine they would be fine assuming the rifle is cleaned appropriately and taken care of. Accuracy would probably be 1/2"-3/4" at 50 yards, maybe somewhere in that area. So no, they are not exactly renowned for their accuracy. However, Ruger does build a nice platform if you want to customize. You can buy aftermarket stock's and barrels for these guns and IMO this would be a very good route to go. Other than that I believe your money would be better spent on a CZ 452 or 453 - reason beeing: Better for the money, more accurate (never seen a CZ that wouldn't shoot!), reliable, better built (IMO), etc. Good luck!

I have a 77/22, as does my brother. They are super reliable, both of ours are plenty accurate. If you are worried about accuracy, buy the target model. Another plus is aftermarket mags(10,25,30,50), stocks, and barrels are available. Oh, and like most Rugers they come with rings. I personally love them. But to be fair I have only played with one CZ. It was a Brno/CZ transition and I wasnt impressed, the action was very rough, the rear sight wasnt mounted straight and there were machining marks all over the action. I know the new CZ's are nicer, but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth, and I didnt know CZ made a stainless 22 I thought they were nickel plated.

I have a 77/22Magnum Stainless Ruger, and I'm here to tell you it is no slouch in the accuracy department!! CZ452shooter is correct in saying that they can be hit or miss, but if you do get a good one, they are dandy. I have shot CZ 452 American 22 mags that will not shoot with this Ruger, and the Ruger likes several types of ammo to boot! What's not to like? Regards, Eagleye.

thx again for a round of info.

not worried about accuracy to badly, just want a good looking grouse/gopher/tin can plinker.

thought it would be nice to have a rimfire rifle that pretty much matches the Hawkeye I am planning on buying at the end of the month.:)

If you dont have a rimfire, I would buy the 22LR. Its way cheaper to shoot, quieter, and has more mags available. Once you are hooked on rimfires, I am sure you will end up with a 22mag, and or a 17. Good luck.
