Ruger 77/44 magazine feed problem - UPDATED post #11

So my 77/44 does not feed properly when it has more then 2 shells in the magazine. They get caught on the edge of the chamber. Im assuming this is a spring tension issue as its fine with one or two shells loaded.

Anyone heard of this before? Any suggestions?

Either way. I believe that link should show you how to add or remove tension, you could try it both ways. You may also want to clean the mag inside while it's apart.

4 year bump! I bought a second mag and it does the same thing. I was hoping use would smooth it out but it appears that its actually getting worse.

I dont really want to take these mags apart unless I know its the issue. Has anyone else had this problem wit either the 77/44 or 77/357? Im going to start this week polishing the feed path with my drmel tool and see i that helps.

I bought a 7744 that had feeding issues and the bottom of mag was smooth. I bought ruger mags and it works fine now. Also tightened action/trigger guard screw.

In my 77/357 some truncated cone bullets catch the chamber edge but only when it is the last cartridge in the mag. A strong push chambers it but leaves a mark on the bullet's exposed lead.
XTP, round nose or Campro truncated cone chamber flawlessly.

Well, Ive solved the issue, but uncovered another one in the process.

Bullets are leaving the mag fine, but catching the inside top of the chamber and not allowing the bullet to chamber. I switched to a cartridge with a more tapered bullet (Hornady Leverevoultion) and they chambered flawlessly.

I dont think this is an issue which is magazine related, so im not quite sure how to solve it besides only using bullets with very tapered tips. Somewhat disappointing.

My buddies 77/44 did the same thing but it was the mag tension.a retired smith had it running in minutes. The mags are finicky. Harold
