So I just decided to order and import a “new model” Ruger 77/44 the 7428 16.5” bbl (not to be confused with its slightly longer predecessor the 7716 I believe. So guys who own the 77/44 what is your scope on yours? I haven’t rigged up a pistol caliber bolt rifle yet over my years of collecting iron. Secondly what’s your overall thoughts on your 77/44 as far as accuracy and usefulness in hunting. Looking out the gate to do a trigger job with Timney components. Pretty excited to get it when it arrives.

I’m running a Leupold Mark 3HD 1.5-4 with a Firedot on my Ruger Deerfield Carbine. Using the reticle hashes, I’ve able to accurately hold over for shots out to 200 yards.

As an aside, I just set this up for deer rifle season this fall. Been working on a number of loads. Settled on a 240gr Hornady XTP loaded over 25gr of H110 at 1.604” COL. Running right around 1885fps in the 18.5” barrel with ~2 MOA 4 shot group. Also worked up the 300gr Hornady XTP and the 225gr Barnes XPB. Couldn’t get the Barnes to group well at all. Really wanted them to work, as I’m a huge TTSX fan in my .308 and .300WM. The 300gr XTP is also very accurate and would be an absolute locomotive at 50-75 yards, but I like the extra range the 240gr provides.

I've got a vx3i 1.5-5 that i would think would work well on a 77/44, but i put a skinner peep sight on my 44 mag and really like it. Surprised me how accurate it is and fast to the target.

That's the scope I have on my Marlin 1895GS levergun in 45-70 Gvt ... fantastic, crystal clear optics, accurate, tough little bush scope ... I have a Skinner peep sight on my stainless Chiappa Alaskan takedown 92 clone in 44 Rem Mag ... even with my old eyes I'm still dead on at 50 yds with the Chiappa levergun 44 Mag

I may be slightly partial here, but I'd suggest a Leupold 1.75-6x32 ;)

have shot 240 gr cast bullets in my 44, accuracy is easily suitable for hunting
You're preaching to the choir ... I have one on my BLR '81 takedown stainless in 308 Win ... superb scope

Pretty much a guarantee that I would run a 1.5-5x Leupold VX3. They're great scopes that I am very partial to.

This is a superior hunting scope. A solid first choice. Even had target knobs installed on one and used it for Service Rifle competition back to 500m.

I have a Leupold 2-7x32 on my Ruger M77/44 (synthetic stock), sighted in at 100 yards with 240gr Hornady XTP handloads.

Taking it deer hunting in Michigan this fall - straight-wall cartridge and all.

YMMV

I have had 8 or 9 77/44's over the years, I generally run them with a VX-3 1.5-5 on top, as BUM suggested above. I also used a couple with 3-9's, only because I had the scopes laying around at the time, but in shooting, it was clear that 3X was too much on the bottom and 9X was unnecessary on the top end. However the one I liked the most was a VX-3 1.75-6x32 (pictured below)... it was very bright with a great field of view and I actually used the 6X top end a couple times shooting deer... but it mostly stayed on the lowest setting.20251008_054513.jpg

On mine I have a leupold 2-7x32 I love it perfect size for the rifle. 100 yards site in. It’s a deer killer, and my main deer hunting rifle when I am on my own property and don’t want to be slinging fast high power led around.
