Does anyone have experience with the Ruger Air Hawk or Winchester 500?
Contemplating a <500fps rifle <$300.
Suggestions welcome.

No experience with the winchester but I bought the air hawk once to put it side by side by my Dianas.
Looks are much alike but quality of the ruger is much lower. Get the real deal, you will be happy with it for the rest of your life.
Consider buying a good used one, preferably from before the plastic safety and plastic press on sights era.

Just my $ 0.02. Good luck deciding.

I bought a Ruger Air Hawk in 2007 and it has been my most used rifle ever for pest control. I tossed the scope after the first shot when it slipped thru the rings and popped me in the eye. After though id dare say its killed 2000 or more pigeons. It wasn't ever cleaned till 2019 and when i finally brought it to the range it punched 1 inch holes in papper at 44meters.....Best rifle i ever bought, it also sat in a barn loft for the majority of its life completly unprotected for at least 10-12 years. I now keep it in my most prestigeous cabinet with my best rifles because its a great piece now with a bit of oil on it.

I have looked at the Air Hawks available today and the quality is vastly different. My rifle was also made in China but no doubt in a different factory and to a higher standard. I paid i think $250 on sale from $299 in 2007....that would make it a much more expensive gun than the $200 junk they are selling under the same name today. I am very pleased with what I own but if you want something good and reliable for pest control look at the Henry Smoothbore Garden gun....if you just want a 455fps air rifle seek a different brand unless you can find one used...my model is not for sale.
