Ok, so just picked up a RAR 7.62x39 and started reading all the goodness out there on the AR magwell and how it’s essentially unobtainium in Canada and how the Mini 30 mags are in the same boat.

I haven’t however read anything newer than a year or two old, so I’m wondering if any 7.62x39 RAR owners could share any new info on either the AR magwell (the first choice) or a line on Mini 30 mags? I’m going to be very unhappy if I can’t have at least six spare mags for this little pig!

Cheers!

I have a x39 RAR with the factory configuration of Mini30 mags. If you can find them at dealers, new ones are about $45/each. I bought two last year when a sponsor who had them in stock had a free shipping promotion. I saw recently a sponsor who had them, but I can't for the life of me remember where, but they do re-stock at various dealers now and then. If you get REALLY desperate, there is a guy on EE right now trying to get $90 for each mag

Thanks for that. I’ve found a few mini 30 mags (5/10), and I’m also getting the Firecastle Customs RAR AK Magwell, so I ordered six Magpul AK mags (5/20) as well. I’ll see if they both work well and if they do, I’ll just get a second RAR 7.62x39 hahaha.

Or find the MXR BCL 20 round mags and pull out a file.

I did this to a 556/223 I had. Was able to run 20 round magazines in it no problem. You will need to file the mag well to fit the protrusions on the MXR magazine, but this way they are still legal. If you pay attention it is an easy 30 min job, and most will not even notice the filing in the magazine well area. This mag will not fit into any semi auto rifles because of the protrusions, so this still makes your rifle and mags legal.

I picked up some MRX mags to do just this.
How much plastic did you have to take off the magwel? Mind posting some pics?

I don't have any more pics, and sold the rifle not long after this. Not because of the filing, but I just could not get it to shoot any better than 1" groups.

I used a med file, and it only took about 20 min of file, check, file. In the end I did more checking than filing, and didn't need to check so often.
Take the mag well out, and do it on a hard surface so you stay flat. I aligned things with the magazine and pencil marked things out, then went at it. As I recall I also had to hit the top of the magazine a tad as it sat a bit higher than the stock ones, just so the bolt cleared. No problem using the stock magazines as well after, and you could barely see that any work was done on it.

At first I wanted to get the AICS insert, but gavel was being slooooow, and figured this was cheaper in the end. Mags are way cheaper and 20 rounds. Worst case you can get an new adapter from them if needed.

I was about to post that company in the states makes an ak mag well for the rar, but it’s pricey, but your idea with the bcl mags is big brain thinking! Thanks for posting this

It wasn't my idea. Read about it on the web. Guys in the states doing this, just not well documented, and of course I didn't document it either.

Just sharing what worked for me. I'm not afraid to try out some interesting things once in a while, and amazingly some even work!

Thanks for the tips. I'll probably have a go at it this weekend, and I'll try and take some pics. I was a bit hesitant as I always go by the rule of "modify the part, not the gun" but it is a replaceable part and is sounds like its pretty low impact.

I am as well on that thought of modify the part. The problem with that is once you modify the mag, and it fits in all the other mag wells it is now a prohib item as it holds over 5 rounds.

This way it still all stays legit.
