Looking to buy either a Ruger American Ranch (16") or a regular American (22") in .223.

how much accuracy would I be giving up at no more than 300 yards? I like the short barrell, makes it nice and light, but don't want to make 3' groups either.

Could anyone elaborate? Is the extra 6" worth it? (Don't ask my wife that one! Hahaha)

It shouldn't make any difference in mechanical accuracy at all. You will lose muzzle velocity, but at 300M it won't really make too much of a difference.

Also if you buy a Ruger American and you think you might ever want to drop it into a different stock with a DBM, you should email CDI precision and just let them know you might be interested in a DBM for AI mags. They are taking names to judge interest in order to decide if they will develop one.

Well my 5.56 RARR does 1.5 inch at 100 yards with factory hornady 55gr. So in spring when I have time to develop a pet load I'm sure I can cut it in half. But I'm pretty sure I can hit those damn coyotes at 200 to 250 with out much issue.

Hopefully the do come out with one. It's also great to see that Timney has a Ruger American trigger offering as well.

The compact only comes in a 12.5" pull. I have large gorilla arms. I need the 13.75" pull.
What is a Dbm? I'll have to look into this some more.

Doh! Didn't know about the pull length.

I hope they do make a bottom metal, so anyone that may be interested in one should send them an email saying you're interested. They asked me what caliber (probably for action length) so include that in your email if you send one.

As mentioned above, at 300M, you won't lose much from 22" to 16" other than velocity. I'd go with the 16" Ranch. It's got a one piece scope rail and threaded muzzle, not that there's much recoil to a 223.

I sent 'em an email. If they do, I'd pickup the Ruger American Ranch as a cheap plinker. :)

The Barnes Bullet website recommends 70 grain bullets for 1:8 twist barrels, which the RARR5.56 and RA.223 are equipped with. I bought 62gr for mine since it was heaviest ammo readily available. Haven't had a chance to do a comparison yet tho...
