finally got a day off work and was able to take the new Ruger American Rimfire out to the range.
first off let me start by saying getting into the range was a bit of a chore!
apparently im the only one who is willing to brave the -20 some weather for some plinking fun around here!
so after chaining up and using my front bumper as a bull dozer and climbing over 2 down tree's (forgot the chainsaw) i finally made it into the range.
nice cool crisp day, just under -20.
got my juices flowing by trying my new fiber optic sites on my Ruger 22/45 Lite then putting my red dot back on and peppering some cardboard.
once i had that out of my system i got to work on the American.
now i had originally wanted to compare the American to my Savage side by side but ill have to wait for that, i felt that it would be unfair because i dont have any glass on my American yet. so once i get some glass on it i will take them both out and compare them side by side as they feel very similar.
so i started by shooting 10 rounds at 15yrd to see how close the gun was out of the box.
got this, the top red circle.
i was impressed.
this was keep in mind free standing with iron sites and im old with bad eyes.
so i decided to let the new girl stretch her legs a little so i moved the cardboard out to 20yrd and put some paper on it and got this;
so with the exception of one flyer thats under 1", again with iron sights free standing -20 something with a slight breeze, and and shooting just blazers.
so, figured id keep moving it out.
so moved the cardboard out to 30yrds and shot at the orange stickers on the top and bottom.
so she is grouping not bad, little high. course by this time im shooting without gloves and starting to get a bit of a cold shake going on.
so, one final test.
stretched out to 45yrs-ish, the stickers on the left and right, five rounds each.
so its hitting high now and im grouping is really opening up.
but you know what, im pretty happy with it, when you consider that at 45yrds the front fiber optic site was covering half the target (half the sheet of paper, not the sticker!) and again, blazer ammo, cold as balls and free standing, shaking a bit more due to cold and glasses starting to fog up (im sure i could find a couple more excuses if pressed!)
now, what i did notice.
the American Rimfire was a little clunky to work the action when i got it this week.
not as smooth as i would have liked it.
i did take the bolt out and give it a nice treatment with G96 last night and a light coat of G96 oil because i knew it was gonna be cold out.
that said by the time i had finished and put 100 rounds down range the action on the gun was a HELL of a lot smoother!
real nice to cycle the bolt now, really smoothed out a LOT!
flawless mags, of course the old tried and true 10/22 rotary mags.
stock was real nice, all be it cold on my bare hands, but nice.
im really impressed with the gun so far, specially the price!
all in the gun ran me $315.
which is substantially less then the $450 my savage ran me.
what i will be doing with it.
i will be picking up some glass, its on order already.
i will try it a few more times to see if i wanna keep the stock its on.
if i dont take a good liking to the stock im gonna order up a Boyd wood one, one similar to the one that the savages come with, probably the thumb hole one.
as you can see from the video i was popping the rounds off pretty fast, im sure if it was summer and i was sitting at the bench on a bag the groups would of course be nicer.
