finally got a day off work and was able to take the new Ruger American Rimfire out to the range.
first off let me start by saying getting into the range was a bit of a chore!
apparently im the only one who is willing to brave the -20 some weather for some plinking fun around here!

so after chaining up and using my front bumper as a bull dozer and climbing over 2 down tree's (forgot the chainsaw) i finally made it into the range.

nice cool crisp day, just under -20.

got my juices flowing by trying my new fiber optic sites on my Ruger 22/45 Lite then putting my red dot back on and peppering some cardboard.

once i had that out of my system i got to work on the American.

now i had originally wanted to compare the American to my Savage side by side but ill have to wait for that, i felt that it would be unfair because i dont have any glass on my American yet. so once i get some glass on it i will take them both out and compare them side by side as they feel very similar.

so i started by shooting 10 rounds at 15yrd to see how close the gun was out of the box.
got this, the top red circle.

i was impressed.
this was keep in mind free standing with iron sites and im old with bad eyes.

so i decided to let the new girl stretch her legs a little so i moved the cardboard out to 20yrd and put some paper on it and got this;

so with the exception of one flyer thats under 1", again with iron sights free standing -20 something with a slight breeze, and and shooting just blazers.

so, figured id keep moving it out.
so moved the cardboard out to 30yrds and shot at the orange stickers on the top and bottom.

so she is grouping not bad, little high. course by this time im shooting without gloves and starting to get a bit of a cold shake going on.

so, one final test.

stretched out to 45yrs-ish, the stickers on the left and right, five rounds each.

so its hitting high now and im grouping is really opening up.
but you know what, im pretty happy with it, when you consider that at 45yrds the front fiber optic site was covering half the target (half the sheet of paper, not the sticker!) and again, blazer ammo, cold as balls and free standing, shaking a bit more due to cold and glasses starting to fog up (im sure i could find a couple more excuses if pressed!)

now, what i did notice.
the American Rimfire was a little clunky to work the action when i got it this week.
not as smooth as i would have liked it.
i did take the bolt out and give it a nice treatment with G96 last night and a light coat of G96 oil because i knew it was gonna be cold out.
that said by the time i had finished and put 100 rounds down range the action on the gun was a HELL of a lot smoother!
real nice to cycle the bolt now, really smoothed out a LOT!

flawless mags, of course the old tried and true 10/22 rotary mags.
stock was real nice, all be it cold on my bare hands, but nice.

im really impressed with the gun so far, specially the price!
all in the gun ran me $315.
which is substantially less then the $450 my savage ran me.

what i will be doing with it.
i will be picking up some glass, its on order already.
i will try it a few more times to see if i wanna keep the stock its on.
if i dont take a good liking to the stock im gonna order up a Boyd wood one, one similar to the one that the savages come with, probably the thumb hole one.

as you can see from the video i was popping the rounds off pretty fast, im sure if it was summer and i was sitting at the bench on a bag the groups would of course be nicer.

I had the long and short barrel gals in my hands today.
I was impressed with them. At a gun shop, so no shooting.
The short barreled one or youth model (?) was a bit rough on cycling.
But as you mentioned ^^ OP, just a bit of working should free it up.
If I was in the market for a 22 rim fire today, I would of had to flip a coin
to decide which one would of come home with me.
Hard not to like this American in either form.
Need to lose one and maybe go back while they still have inventory.

I really like that 22/45. Did it come with the flash hider, or did you put that on afterwards? Any information appreciated

ya, that 22/45 Lite is not bad, eh.
i cant help but wanna play Golden Eye whenever i take it to the range.

the compensator, your right, is a custom made one from MadDogs out of the states.
guy does great work and will make them anyway you want, unfortunately he will not ship to Canada so you have to get creative to get them up here.

Awesome review!I know the aftermarket barrels don't fit but what about the mag release?

i havnt pulled it apart yet, family came up for a visit this weekend so i didnt get to rip it apart like i was wanting too, but from a quick look i dont think it would.
i think it might FIT into there but it has a different trigger guard i think from the 10/22

ill try to get it out of the safe and do a quick tare down tonight, ive got a couple TS long ones up in my parts bin so ill try them out and let ya know.

ok, so i got bored.
took the gun out to the shop and ripped it apart.
i made a video and its uploading but i was rambling on and on in it, its a good video, you get to see all the insides but i got side tracked and my showing of the mag release turned into a detailed operation of the entire inside of the gun.

so ill add a link here in a bit when its up but here is the answer to the question about the extended mag release.

No.

it WILL fit, but poorly.
the trigger guard is set back about 1" to 1 1/2" back from where the 10/22's one is which gives you this big gap, this is due to the fact that there is no trigger safety on the American, it has what i think they call a Tang Safety (?) it up behind the bolt, so you have a gap where the trigger safety on the 10/22 would be.

also i dont think the medium paddle will work because with the grip being so far back you wont be able to reach it.
here are some pics of the American beside a 10/22.
you can clearly see its been lengthened out, and i put a TS extended release on it so you can see what it looks like.

the mag release, you can see its identical to the 10/22 one that comes on the new models.

here is a video i made with my phone while i was playing around.
i get real chatty while making it and end up going a lot more in depth into the gun then just the mag release.

view at your own peril of boredom!

Are you using a 6'o'clock hold with your irons? Don't cover the target with the front sight, poi should be right above the front sight?

Any new updates? Still running good? Any new issues?

mine runs flawless.
ive since put some glass on it and it comes to the range 9/10 times with me.
real nice plinker.
when i head down south for holidays this summer ill take it out one afternoon for some gophers and see how she runs.
but so far for punching paper and hitting pop cans its great.
wish these had come out a year earlier, would have saved me buying a savage MKII and having to get all new mags for that system.

im still contemplating picking up a Boyd stock for it... not because i dont like the american stock, but rather i REALLY like the Boyd ones.
maybe this winter.

i wonder if they will make any bull barrels for these in the future?
i look at the center fire american rifles and i see Ruger has just put out bull barrel versions of those on green stocks.
