Thinking of buying a Ruger American in .308 at Le Baron. They have it listed as new, not on sale, for $399, so when they have the next no tax sale where member 10% discounts still apply, I will have a good entry level gun for $360 all in, plus a scope and rings.

Has anyone bought one yet and have an opinion based on actual use? Your input would be appreciated. My friend says Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 all the way, but Le Baron does not carry it so it would cost me $575+ tax included at Al Flarety's.

Id rather spend the extra $$ and have a proven, all steel rifle...That and I hate lebaron (leNoStock)

Sometimes you do get what you pay for...;)

You want an opinion based on actual use, or life experience?

You'll get what you pay for.

Ruger "American", nice patriotic name to hide the cheap crap underneath. Want something even cooler how about a Mossberg "Night Train", or a Stevens 200. The only thing in common with all these is once you're done wasting time and money changing stocks, triggers, barrels, cheap scopes & rings, you could have bought something decent used.

If you want something useable save a little more or get something used. If for hunting you can't do much better than a JC Higgins model 50 or Husky FN98 in 30-06. Either should set you back around $400-500. Pick up a used Leupold and you'll have a rig that will give a lifetime of service with no hassles, plus pride of ownership that comes with a proven quality all steel firearm.

As with the OP I'm curious too as I've been eyeballing a .308 american.

For more money I'm sure there are better rifles but for this price point, compared to others in it's class ie Savage Axis I am curious how the ruger rates.

I inherited about 440 rounds of .308, so I thought I would buy this one because it is light, supposedly accurate, and if I break it...no big deal. I have 12 military centre fire guns, all very nice to shoot and well built, none in .308, and all too heavy/impractical to lug around in the bush. I don’t hunt larger game much, so I did not want to buy anything too fancy and hence just an entry level rifle to shoot off this free ammo. I like Ruger and was thinking of a Hawkeye 77, but even used they are at least $600 in good condition.

I was just wondering if anyone bought one yet and brought it to the range and found anything annoying or junky.

In that case, Savage Axis new can be had for $287.00 ish.

You can get something far better on the EE. I got a Ruger M77 Hawkeye, in.308, last year from a CGN'er for $ 550.00 shipped. Its an excellent rifle.

I bought a Ruger American in .270 from Epps a few weeks ago. Ive handled alot of cheap entry priced rifles, and this new Ruger is'nt one of them. Its on par with guns costing $200-$300 more money. Even Epps told me that the ruger is better quality and better features than a more expensive remington model 700 sps, which after comparing them side by side, I agreed the quality was better.

My Ruger American shoots around MOA with factory ammunition, and if I try other brands, I'm sure sub MOA will be possible, and when I reload, I'm sure it will be a tack driver.

Overall, I compare the quality of my new ruger, to be about as good as my Tikka T3 lite, and some things are better.

IMHO, if someone has something bad to say about these new Rugers, then its just a opinion about it because of its low price, and probably have no facts or experience with it, to back it up.

If your interested in buying one, then go see it in person, and don't take the advice from someone who has'nt scene it in person. I really like my Tikka, but now that I own a American, and compare them, I wonder why the Tikka costs more

The Ruger does'nt look pretty, like my Remington model 700 BDL, but it shoots better, and is alot nicer to carry, and it seems like it will last forever.... The beefy bolt in the Ruger sure is alot more heavy duty than both my tikka & remington, and the trigger is nice, and now adjusted down to about 3lbs. The plastic magazine hold 4 rounds, and is just as good as my $100 tikka magazine, but half the price.

My only complaints are the ugly plastic stock, but its understandable since its so light, and I prefer a 3-position safety over the 2-position safety it has.

As far as being pleased, I am very. IMHO, the Ruger American is the best gun money can buy, in any gun under $600, and on par with others costing more. Its definetely a step up from other entry level rifles.

This month's issue of Field & Stream has an article on the Ruger by rifle guru David E. Petzal. He writes very highly of it. I would take his word on it. FWIW, I have no opinion on the rifle personally, never having even seen one outside of a picture.

I tried to find DEPs one page article on the rifle on-line but couldn't, but here is the last paragraph..."The Ruger American Rifle is light, tough, and affordable. If you can think of something else that should go into a hunting rifle, let me know because I can't."

This from the rifle guy of America's most popular outdoor magazine, who has about 80 years of living, military service and a hunting resume about a mile long to back his opinion.

Thanks for that, as I've seen lots of reviews and most were very positive except one that said the grip on the stock and the trigger was brutal. Some reviewers are biased, so hearing people who actually bought one and used it making good comments holds more water for me!

I can't wait to get mine ! Alot of people are #####ing out new products . Remington 700 actions are out of date . Most remington new guns are sloppy anyways , quality as gone down and they sell for 600$+ . The american rifle is a very nice rifle for 400$ . I compared it with savage throphy hunter xp at the store and the savage action is sloppy compared to the new ruger . Yes the stock may look cheap but it fits very well in my hands and i prefer plastic stock over wood .

Hey RolfyRolf thought you might want to know Lebarons has a %20 off sale on firearms now just started today good luck
