So I have finally decided to change the barrel out on my 308 Ruger RPR first version, mainly due to the long throat from the factory. I will be going with a JC Customs barrel I purchased from Hirsch Precision, Peter is great to deal with. Once I have the barrel and muzzle break installed I will be back to the drawing board for load development using N150 powder and a variety of different bullets and weights to achieve the best results possible. I mainly use this rifle for target shooting out to 400 yards as well as deer/bear hunting.

Has anyone done this with a JC barrel? What is your opinion on the barrel? I have read nothing but good things about these barrels.

I've felt that N150 and 550 powders are just a little on the slow side for the 308 and I've always wanted to work with N140 or 540 instead.
Varget is the universal standard though for long range 308 competition.

I've come to accept that to make a mistake on burn rate selection is better a little too fast than a little too slow. Faster is guaranteed clean ignition and full burn. Too slow can be accurate for small groups but go south over extended rounds as the barrel fouls up.

Please post groups though once you get to work with that new barrel. (No cherry picking.. bad news too if there is any) I've considered getting one as well.... Same as you... heard good things but not from first hand accounts.

N150 was picked by a CAD Palma Team after substantial testing. N150 has shown considerably higher V in 6.5X45L with 123 grain bullets. It is also cleaner and VV powder dominates BR. Best powder can only be determined by testing and VV is tops in many calibres and bullet weights.

JC makes great barrels.
Use target bullets for target shooting and have a different load with good hunting bullet and zero for hunting.
Hard to beat 155's within that 300-400M range. Put 46gr of N150 under it, if it doesn't group that, the barrel isn't the problem, 100% guaranteed.
This past weekend during our practice one of our top TR shooters(aperture sights) had a 50-9V at 800M, with 155's and N150 in mild wind conditions. V is 12" dia.

Finally picked up my new JC barrel and will be having it installed this weekend I hope. Load development will be starting with N150 and 155 Scenars as well as 178 Bergers and maybe some SST's. If I dont have any luck here I will change out to N140. Wish me luck LOL
